After his rise through the ranks James Faulkner had seemed to be an entrenched part of Australian cricket’s future.

Knee and hamstring problems restricted Faulkner to just 12 of a possible 28 regular-season games in his final two seasons with Hobart, before a lengthy and bitter contract negotiation ended his time in Australian cricket. Faulkner was angered that the then coach Adam Griffith had made the hard call despite thinking he was “a mate”.
