Australian Domestic Season 2019/20

Yeah if they didn't back Ferg enough to give him a solid opportunity then he shouldn't have got the nod in the first place. To do a complete 180 and decide he can't cut it at Test level after Hobart just reeks of impulsiveness, I do not support the casual logic of change for the sake of change at all
This still rankles even now

They bring Ferguson into the team then drop him
and then what did Maddinson do in the following test matches ? Do the selectors apply the same criteria to him ? No.

Same with Neville,. He was dropped because he wasn't making 100s and winning test matchs but he was batting better than several of those above him, being 4th or 5th best batman in each innings.
His replacement Wade performs worse in the next game and is still selected for the following test matches.

Similiar with Joe Mennie, fair enough his bowling in the first innings wasn't that good but he bowled well enough in the second innings and was dropped after his single test.

If he had have batted in front of Mitch Marsh in the test matches they played together I reckon his record would've been markedly better. Was an obvious selection too all things considered, but nope, keeper at 7.

Nah, 7 is fine for a keeper. Nevill's problem was that he would come in at either 4-400 or 4-40. So he would throw his wicket away looking for quick runs or the rest of the order had failed as well. Very rarely did he come in at 4-250 where he could play his natural game.

Picking Wade to replace him was basically the reason Hartley retired when he did despite being the best keeper and the best batsman keeper not named Nevill. So it was bad selection policies compounding on bad selection policies.

Nevill peaked on his Test debut at Lords. I think he made 40-odd and looked a million bucks, remember thinking "yep definitely the right decision to replace Haddin with this guy".

Then he never looked as good since.

Well, no.

Mitch Marsh would come in at 4-40 or 4-400 meaning Nevill would come in at 5-50 or 5-410

If there were 6 bats, I agree that 7 would've been fine. But he's a far superior bat to Marsh and far less aggressive. Everything about the both of them suggests Nevill should've been batting in front of the golden child IMO.

Unfortunately Mitch Marsh hasn't produced an innings of real substance at the top level since his 181 at the WACA in 2017. His batting definitely is more suited to the shorter forms of the game. The selectors must have given a sigh of relief when he justified their faith wit 5-46 at the Oval.

I wouldn't even bat an eyelid if Mitch Marsh bats at no.6 in Australia's next Test match.

Sure, it's absurd how many chances he's had and he should have been dropped many times during the run(s) he had in the side, but he's close enough to being in the best XI if they really want an all-rounder. He knows how to bat on a road.

The word was that ahead of the last Ashes out here, the job was his to lose. Then he failed in a couple of Shield matches and they went with Paine. Nev will almost certainly never play another test, yet had he made even a 50 odd in one of the Shield games leading up to that series, he instead of Paine may well have been captaining Australia six months later. Sliding doors (though of his own making).

Yeah Nevill losing form not long after he regained it after losing his spot was a big blow for him. Reckon he would be better than Paine if he had been selected instead, but we'll never know and his Shield performances have not been the same.

He may well have been Aus captain if not for it.

Thanks for paraphrasing that Burgey post for us, Morgs.
