Get the impression the word has gone out that if you want to be picked as a batsman you need to score runs in the top four in the Shield. If it has, I think that’s a good thing

Yep I think this too. Although Lehmann created some buzz at 5 last week.

Young Rogers from Tassie looks an exciting prospect. Like his action and the way he hits the crease.

The idea is if you bat in the top four you’re more likely to be facing bowlers who are fresh and when the ball is doing a bit, and that if you score runs in those spots you’ll be better equipped to step up to the next level where the bowling will be better, even if you’re batting lower down the order.

They won't hurt him, but it used to be the way that they'd prefer contenders to bat higher up, then they would debut them at six.

For example, Boon, both Waughs, Blewett, Ponting, Clarke etc all debuted at six.

Fair enough. So these runs from 5 aren't helping Lehman's chances as much as it seems
TBF, a lot of Lehmann's runs have come from when SA have been under significant pressure.

But yeah, he probably needs to move to 4 to enhance his chances. I know there's been criticism of how Shield cricket is losing relevance as the Australian selectors are increasing influence in the competition, but IMO the Shield is there to produce quality cricketers for Australia, not to win Shield titles.

Absolutely agree.

The shield is a melting pot of high quality players designed to produce the best of the best. There's a reason we only have six sides. Places are limited and the purpose is to develop the next international stars.
