A good day's cricket at the MCG today despite the cold breeze.

The day ended with the Vics slightly ahead on the scoreboard but with having to bat last the game is probably as even as it could get.

Cooper and Mennie got off to a comfortable start against Boland and Tremain till Bolly Boland bowled Mennie then Fawad cleaned up the last 3 wickets in 6 balls with the batsmen not getting their bats to the ball.

Harris and Dean, possibly the shortest opening pair in competition this season, got off to a competent start, with Sayers and Worrall dropping short regularly. The runs were coming easily till Mennie came on and tied things down and then Zampa tempted Dean to slog him out of the ground and cleaned bowled him.
Maxwell was very circumspect when he came in and for a few overs after lunch until he got the measure of Zampa and hit him over his head for 3 boundaries in one over and for 6 in the next. Even Harris got in the act and tonked him over long on for 6.

There a stumping chance as Harris took a windy woof but the Carey was unable to get the ball to the stumps before Harris completed a full revolution and got his bat down.

Worrall came on just before tea and had Maxwell in trouble with his short ball, Maxwell tried to duck and ball caught the edge of his upheld bat and went for 4. The final 2 balls of the over were also short but Maxwell avoided them ok. The first ball of his next over was short, Maxwell again tried to get out of the way but the ball hit his helmet and deflected onto the stump

He certainly looked uncomfortable against those short balls. Has he always been that way ?

That was tea. After tea both Worrall and Zampa looked threatening for the first 4-5 overs and while Handscomb didnt look in trouble he didn't play many shots .but gradually the Vic got back on top and started giving Zampa some stick.

Harris got his 100( dropped on 77 from a pull shot) with big shots off Zampa, (half his runs coming from that bowler) then a mix up in calling saw him run out trying to regain his ground after being sent back.

But that just lead to the highlight of the day, Finch taking Zampa for about 30 runs off 2 overs, most of which went back over the bowlers head, much to the pleasure of the crowd.

Head finally replaced him but still gave away some runs. The other highlight of the day was Joof's caught and bowled of Handscomb for his first wicket in shield cricket and it was a beauty plucking it from a firm hit about an inch off the ground. Hi fives all round and showing off the ball to the crowd, the Croweaters were jubilant.

The Vics still looked in control with Harper picking up runs but when Worrall came back he looked dangerous and the wickets started to fall, it was that time of day to decide should you block out the rest of the day or still try and go for runs ?

The Vics went defensive but when Sayers came back he was too good for that and the Croweaters were back in the game.

Despite that the Vics still made 160 in the last 2.5 hour session

Mennie was the only bowler to keep the runs down and should have bowled more, why they persisted so long with Zampa was a mystery. Worrall was good in his second and third spells.

gotta say though, I'm really loving the seam all-rounder performances

Moz 0 (5)
Cartwright 0 (5)
Marsh 0 (5)

anyway Wade keeps making it hard for himself
Wildermuth 35 and 1/35 and 1/26. The quintessential not good enough at either discipline (yet) to make waves but good enough to be a vital player for the state.

Maxwell I think has a problem. I think that he has such a good eye that his natural game is to just spank the crap out of everything. His most bizarre dismissals come when he simply watches the ball and stops himself from belting it.

His famous T20 leave was a case of him setting himself up and then checking his shot, as though he changed his mind. The dismissal today looked terrible but I think it's because he out-thought himself and by the time the ball got to him he hasn't moved.

It's poor decision making but I wonder if someone or something is getting in his head at times. He might be better to go the Tugga route and just say "I'm never going to hook". Certainly I don't think he's weak against the short ball normally but sometimes I think he out thinks himself and that really needs to stop.

Lack of runs for blokes who might figure in the Ashes is really concerning. I mean, even with Cartwright seemingly nailed on, there's a chance for the others to really put some pressure on for later in the series on his and other spots and noone's really doing it.

I fell asleep with Victoria in complete control only to wake up and see the South Australians had skittled the middle-order-tail. New ball?
