Australian Domestic Season 2016/17

Cooper had a season of high and low scores
This saved his career though. He was actually playing without a contract after he was delisted, so bad were his performances last season. He's really dug his career out of the pit this season, finally cementing a spot in a BBL team (partly as an opening bowler  ) and taking what was probably his last Sheffield Shield chance as well.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your updates across the season. They've really made the Shield easier to follow, and kept the thread ticking over even during periods where people's eyes are focused on other cricket. A CW treasure.

Interesting to see that SA won so convincingly without anyone getting a hundred.

Good to see Mennie back and taking wickets.

Mackin hasn't done much since the big B cake back.

So sad seeing Queensland rolled like that in Hartley's last game (or any game really). Pattinson is a real talent though. He was hitting the pitch hard and looked very nasty to face.

Yes, thanks Midwinter. They've been great, much appreciated by me also. :)

Shame Vics don't get to play their final at home.

Thanks, glad to hear the posts have been of interest :)

Now

Does anyone know which of either the Duke or the Kookaburra ball will be used in the final ?

Yeah not sure about that.

Stoinis heading back to WA with some family issues behind it, so they won't be held up. Be an interesting off-season for Victoria, with Pucovski and Harper having concussion issues.

A WA XI next year featuring Stoinis, MMarsh, Cartwright, Turner and Agar will not be short on bowling options.

Paine been offered a job with Kookaburra, and would move to Victoria for it if he doesn't get a contract.

Victoria sniffing around Ludeman.

Victoria has had a similar thing going on at various points over the last couple of seasons, with Stoinis, Christian and Maxwell all batting in the top seven. White bowled lots in one game this season too.

I've always thought Cartwright would basically end up giving up bowling (he's actually continued to bowl regularly for longer than I expected already, tbh), and with him scoring tons at three and so many other bowling options in their side I think it'll more or less happen next season.

Looking at Vic team going forward, in general age terms

Young - Harris
Young - Dean
Vet - Quiney
Prime - Finch
Vet - White
Vet - Christian
Young - Gotch/Harper
Prime - Pattinson
Prime - Tremain
Prime - Holland
Prime - Boland

Handscomb and Maxwell - are Prime but are now Rep players and wont play much
Pattinson may also be playing Rep cricket and not play much

Hastings and Fawad are Vet

So in the next couple of years they are looking for a couple of batsman, an allrounder and possibly a couple of pace bowlers.

Any names that might fill these positions ?

With the bat, I think Will Pucovski would be the "tyro" that they'll give opportunity to, and hope that Harper is OK so that Gotch can just play as a batsman and don't have to continue to use him as a keeper. Eamonn Vines is the grade player most likely to get a sniff, having made the most runs in the competition for the worst side, on a good fast wicket. Blake Thomson is another youngster with a rookie contract who they'll give every opportunity to, and Meyrick Buchanan is back sniffing around the 2nd XI stuff.

Bowling wise, they're very keen on Jackson Coleman (who is 25 or so already but could have a decent career as a quick at that age). Be interesting to see if they persevere with Ian Holland on the list, who takes the mickey out of grade cricket but never gets a game for Victoria, but could slot into the Dan Christian role in the future. Indications are that Evan Gulbis will get a full contract next year, and Ryan Sidebottom took a heap of poles again in grade stuff if they are looking outside contracts, and still isn't that old I don't think.

Depends on if Cartwright is PONI'd tbh.

Given Stoinis already is, perhaps Hilton could do with a move?

Thanks Vic_orthodox thats an excellent summary.

Saw Jake Reed bowl in the Shield game against NSW at the MCG and he struggled a bit. Is he thought to have a future ?

Don't know. He hasn't been able to stay fit for a whole season since making his way into the Vic squad, never really hit his stride in 2016/17.
