does tjb still want the entire vics team playing for aus
Australian teams with more than one Victorian in them are usually terrible. Two at most should be the limit, and never more than one in the batting line up.

Look at the mid-80s with Dean Jones and Tony Dodemaide in the side together, along with Simon O'Donnell and Simon Davis. Hopeless.

Even by the late 80s when things got a bit better there were still only two - Jones and Merv Hughes. Then Jones got dropped but Warne came in, so the side couldn't really go to the next level. Once Merv retired, the team went to the WI in 1995 and won. Sure they had Reiffel as well as Warne, but Pistol was only there because McDermott had to go home. He wasn't a first choice pick. That side flourished because the top six did not have a Victorian in it. Fact.

Then came the 1997 Ashes tour of England which we nearly lost. Why? Because Matthew Elliott was in the top six instead of a non-Victorian. Move ahead to the post-Tubby years, and you had the dominant side led by Steve Waugh and then by Punter. Once they started bringing in Victorian blokes like Hodge post-2008, things started to go downhill again. This corresponded with Siddle coming on the scene too. No good. Two or more Victorians = double trouble for Australian cricket.

I'm telling you, Handscombe and Wade in the top seven together will end in tears. One of them needs to move States.

Reiffel, Warne and Elliott in the team in the 1997 series. Had to rescue it, having had to carry NSW's Mark Taylor for eighteen months beforehand.

Massive win for QLD, I've gotta say that I didn't see it coming. In the Tassie game, good to see two locals performing well. Great work Forkers Faulkner on his debut ton and Webster had a strong game too.

Midwinter does a great job after each game mentioning the good performers, I'm going to focus on the not so good.

Mitch Marsh's batting so far: 14, 0, 12, 0. for a total of 26 runs at 6.50
Callum Ferguson after 101 in the first innings of the season has made 37 @ 7.40 (41 @ 5.85 if you include the Test match)
Ben Dunk was the highest run scorer in 15/16 with 837 runs. He currently has 127 @ 15.87
Marcus Stoinis has a highest score of 11 not out, scoring 39 runs @ 9.75
Glenn Maxwell with 1 wicket @ 86 and batting average of 25.80 not really screaming 'pick me' for India.

Also David Moody who is surely getting a game because of his connections has 2/311 @ 155.5

That was an interesting round of games.

Vics in trouble in their first innings but a good lower order fight back then ripping through the Croweaters batting to set up the win, despite the efforts of Joe Mennie.
The Apple eaters hold out the Bluebaggers against the odds for the first draw of the season
The Sandgropers declare behind but still lose, collapsing when almost in sight of the draw.

Batting
Vic Harris 409, Handscomb 363
SA Head 362, Cooper 352
NSW Patterson 375, Henriques 242
Qld Labuschagne 336, Burns 282
Tas Bailey 376, Doolan 235
WA Turner 329, Cartwright 303

Bailey back in form, but there is not much depth there in Tas, Doolan 19th on list of run scorers,Turner and Cartwright are the surprise leading runmakers in the west. Harris and Patterson continuing to go well.

Bowling
Vic Tremain 21, Holland 20
SA Sayers 21, Mennie 12
NSW Copeland 14, Somerville/O'Keefe 11
Qld George 14, Feldman 11
Tas Bird 13, Milenko 11
WA Agar 16, Behrendorff 14

Down to 2 spinners in the top 10, Holland and Agar. Agar,O'Keefe and Somerville collected most of their wickets in the same game on the bunsen at the SCG.
Holland might be ending the career of last years leading spinner Fawad.
( Zampa 9@49, Swepson 8@48, Boyce 2@80)

Tremain continuing his good start to the season, Sayers and Mennie doing well again, NSW spreading teh wickets around.

Next round starts on Monday.

See, this is the Victorian way of thinking, focusing on individual performances.

That team nearly lost an Ashes series to a 90s England outfit, and it was because it had three Victorians in it.
