All fair points but Lehmann, Hodge, Hussey, Hayden, Love et al were all competing with each other. Warner's run to the top is a little clearer.
To be totally honest we've been a bit crap on flat tracks for awhile so a flat track bully doesn't sound half bad.

Good to see Bailey get a wicket

Haven't he and Cullen taken a fall in recent years!

Does Cullen have a contract?

Does he still play grade?
Don't think so. All out cricket did a piece about falls from grace after winning awards and he featured. I think they said he lost his contract

Not sure about Warner, he has made most of those FC runs on roads, but he still got them. You'd want to see him score runs on the major test grounds in Australia, which was a criteria in the past for guys like Lehmann, Hodge, Hussey, Hayden, who made a lot of runs on their home pitches but not a lot elsewhere in Australia for a good part of their careers. You would want to se him tested against most of the best state bowlers, not just some Zimbabwe A team or a road at Bankstown against Peter George and co. Seems a bit of a FTB to me so far in FC cricket. Surely 2nd XI runs don't count towards test selection.
tbf since moving to opener he's only played on:
MCG (2 innings @ 55.5)
SCG (2 innings @ 57.5)
Bellerive (2 innings @ 24.5)

Zimbo and Bankstown.

Yeah he needs to go to Brisbane, Adelaide and the WACA and make runs there too, but there's nothing to really indicate he can't or won't.

I certainly see the point Rob is making and it's part of the reason I wouldn't pick Warner until the end of the season unless there's some major injury woes. (which tbf, they already are for most of the shield teams)

Agree with that. I don't think anyone is saying to get him on a plane back to SA today. He needs to show that it isn't just a short burst of form, and also the chances of a spot opening up aren't good until at least the Indian tests (barring injury). But no other opener in the country is laying a marker down like Warner is, so if a spot opens up he's very likely to get his chance.

Whilst Watson, Marsh and to a lesser extent Clarke are in the team, always a possibility.

Not to mention Ponting, for other reasons.

Would be bizarre to pick him in the test team when he hasn't even played a FC match at all our grounds, and hasn't even played a full season yet. Im not against him, but could you imagine him in the team playing at the Gabba or Perth having not played ONE Shield match at those grounds? Its all a little premature, and i'd have Khawaja in before him at this stage.

Would love to see Cummins, MMarsh, Maddinson and Lynn run out the Shield summer strongly

Dripping with potential, those chaps

Slats I think didn't play at all venues before debuting

I'll have to check, but even with Slats he wasn't in the frame until right before that 1st test in 93, Hayden had been pounding the runs and I'm sure was pencilled in for the test, they played so many tour matches before the first test that you could get into form and out of form again, Hayden had a few innings where he didn't score many, Slats scored a big hundred, plus Bob Simpson hated Hayden, didn't rate him at all, and there was no way Hayden was going to play once Simpson had his say. In Hayden's book he certainly doesn't have anything good to say about Simmo.

yeah neither Simmo and Tubs had any time for Haydos

i think, with Slats, his debut at the WACA was in a Test against NZ - I think he'd played at the other Australian Test venues before playing a Test

remembering him mentioning it in his book (that AB was aghast when Slats told him he hadn't played at the WACA before)

Mitch Marsh has got some technical issues he needs to work on with the bat. His defensive game looks a bit loose to me at this stage, but he's got youth on his side. Reckon he'll make it though.

Oh Bugger. The lunch break has done in Ben. Top knock anyway. Really pushed the score along.

Aggressive declaration. I was sure he was going for 500+. Certainly time is not a concern, but maybe worried about the weather?
