Tension is building between Cricket Australia's team performance department and NSW following the recent omissions of Phillip Hughes and Nic Maddinson from the Blues' teams. The Blues have in the past week left young gun Maddinson out of the Shield game against Tasmania, which finished yesterday, and named Hughes 12th man for a one-day game - decisions which The Tonk understands have raised eyebrows in Pat Howard's team. While CA cannot tell states how to pick their sides, it's believed skipper Michael Clarke spoke to the Blues' state cricket manager, David Thompson, seeking an explanation for the moves. The Argus review recommended last year that ''CA should retain the discretion to direct Players of National Interest (PONI) to play one format or another''. As Hughes is a recent Test opener and 20-year-old Maddinson an Australia A batsman as recently as November, both can lay strong claims to the PONI tag. In NSW's defence, however, the Blues have produced more than their fair share of national representatives and have exported many players to rival states. Had Maddinson played in Hobart this week, he would have had to tip out either former Test opener Simon Katich or stalwart Ben Rohrer, who justified his selection by making a vital 83 in NSW's first innings.
