Better to get it done now, than risk being suspended for the first match of the WC imo. (Which is what I think would happen if he had have picked it up against Japan).

Exactly, if he was to rest against Bahrain then pick up a yellow against Japan, im pretty sure he would miss the 1st WC game due to suspension...

Then shouldn't we have just got the whole first string squad to pick up cards in this match, then again vs bahrain, miss the dead rubber with japan and be secure for the WC? 8-)

Perhaps Neill was the only one in danger? No need to get all angsty about it. Neill IS one of the most important players in the team (After Schwarzer only imo), and if he's picking up a yellow now so he doesn't risk being suspended for an early game in the WC i'm all for it.

I do see the logic in it, but can't say i agree with purposefully getting a yellow card...i mean you **** it up you could injure the other guy...purposeful handball for the win.

Yeah better to have Neill out now then out in the WC. Although say if Neill played against Bahrain and Japan and didn't get booked, then the slate is wiped clean come the World Cup (obviously not suspensions) in terms of yellow cards? Not sure if that is the case now, but it used to be. Or at least in the Champions League it does/did.
