What they need to do

Cameron White in for Smith. Bat him at number six. Smith bowls **** all anyway and White is a more experienced/mature more skillful cricketer and is also a good leader. Make him Vice Captain. He is only 27 and has a lot of cricket left in him.

Someone like Copeland should have a look in for anyone not performing.

Either O'Keefe or Hauritz should come in for Beer assuming he doesn't take the world by storm in his next few tests (i would leave him there for a few/didn't look to bad).

Make White actually hold his place in the side before making him VC, earmarking people is a bad business.

Looking at this it seems quite bizzare that Okeefe and Copeland haven't had a look in.

Btw, can't express enough admiration for EWS and Goughy's earlier posts. Australia musn't allow themselves to just start plucking out random 20 year olds.

So...3-1 loss. With 3 innings defeats. Not one that looks good on a CV.

I think it's pretty obvious that Australia are pretty meh these days. Let's look at the results since McWarne retired......

2007/08 vs Sri Lanka (h) - 2-0 - won this series convincingly, but could easily have been 1-1 had it not been for bad umpiring.
2007/08 vs India (h) - 2-1 - did pretty well, Sydney could easily have been a draw or even an Indian win however.
2008 vs West Indies (a) - 2-0 - were the better side despite Chanderpaul's best efforts.
2008/09 vs India (a) - 0-2 - India were very good here, Australia's bowling on the other hand was disgraceful.
2008/09 vs New Zealand (h) - 2-0 - yeah it was a comfortable victory, but it was NZ ffs, not really that strong opposition.
2008/09 vs South Africa (h) - 1-2 - could possibly have been 3-0 had we not choked, but still it was a creditable effort from South Africa to win a series on our home turf.
2008/09 vs South Africa (a) - 2-1 - best series that we've played since McWarne, especially given what happened the series before.
2009 vs England (a) - 1-2 - yes it could've been 2-2, but it showed that our aura/mental strength was pretty **** despite being easily the better statistical side.
2009/10 vs West Indies (h) - 2-0 - not really a great series, particularly given it's the West Indies.
2009/10 vs Pakistan (h) - 3-0 - does this count? :p
2009/10 vs New Zealand (a) - 2-0 - were good here but it wasn't against the best of oppositions, either.
2010 vs Pakistan (a) - 1-1 - drawing to those cheating ****s isn't a good look I feel.
2010/11 vs India (a) - 0-2 - could've been drawn, but it wasn't. Poor effort to be whitewashed by India.
2010/11 vs England (h) - 1-3 - worst performance in a while. Didn't even show much heart in defeat here.

The sign? That we aren't as good anymore. Don't panic to arrest the slide, try and pick your best XI and stick to it. Let's not go nutso like the West Indies did in the late 90's.

Any serious reason why Ponting should continue as skipper?

IMO, now that Clarke's been anointed, having Ponting come back in as skipper stalls any rebuilding/remoulding the team in Clarke's image that needs done. Ponting might still have a bit to offer Australia as a batsman, but his time as Test skipper has surely come and gone.

TBH. That looks a solid team to me. If Harris is fit then there's batting down to 11. O'Keefe has to come in, it's baffling to me that Doherty and Beer were picked ahead of him. Ponting will probably be retained, but I think Australia need to move on and start a new era. Ponting's been superb, but his batting form his dipped and his captaincy has never been amazing. I think that team looks pretty solid personally.

Any changes must start with:

- new selectors
- ditch Neilsen and Langer
- new skipper (i.e. move on from Ponting)

and then go from there.

Hussey didn't score many runs at four when he was there either IIRC; has always been much better at five. It's cursed. Bat Beer there and be done with it.
Haha it so is. Clarke was massive there, now Hussey is.

Hussey played most of 2006/7-8 at 4 though.

Just shows that guys Like Mark Waugh and Damien Martyn werent given full due for their great work at #4. Especially Mark Waugh in the 90's, he may not have averaged 50 but he played more tough knocks than guys like Clarke could ever dream of. And Waugh was known as being soft, yet hit some of the most brilliant tons of the decade ( Jamaica 95, Port Elizabeth 97, Adelaide 98, Antigua 91, Durban 94, Bangalore 98). Clarke has some good tons in 09 but so many soft useless ones. Even Mike Hussey has scored so many tough hundreds it puts Clarke to shame. Not a fan.

Martyn is a desperately underrated cricketer.
Personally speaking he was perfectly rated to me he should have never being put back into the test side after he was dropped. It was the strangest decision I have ever seen in Cricket. Drop Hodge for someone who was older averaging less in the game and was flat out the worse of the two cricketer's.

The hardest part, as Warne said in the Herald yesterday, is getting all the players to 'buy in' to getting back to the top. When these days you can make a fortune as a non-Test cricketer, is there the will there amongst the group to climb back to the top?
