Australia failed once. I guess we have to write them off!

Wait a second, anything can happen in a day of cricket. Bangladesh could beat Australia if they each had a good/bad day.

Does that mean that Bangladesh are the better side? No WAY!

Australia will remain on top for at least another World Cup!

i don't think u have read the posts atall.first ofall, they haven't failed ONCE, they have lost 2-3 tour recently.
Secondarily, noone is writing them off, i have said earlier that they are stil the fav's BUT they are no longer the force they used to be a couple of years earlier.

I think Aus need the calming influence of Steven Waugh, he should be in the team for the WC, without him Aus will struggle to retain the WC

The VB series, that is the triangular onedayer with NZ and SA, the recent CT, and the indoor series with Pak.

BTW, by tours i meant Tournaments!

The last 5 series have been like this.

1,VB series, Aus fail to make it to the final

2Series in SA, Aus beat them easily

3Indoor series, Aus lost to PK

4Kenya tour, Aus share trophy with PK

5 Champions Trophy, Aus lost to SL in semis!

Oh right, well that makes a difference - I thought that by tours you meant tours, whereas 2 of their recent defeats have been at home!

Of course that doesn't tell the full story of those series such as how they were rather sneakily removed from the VB, or how they were easily going to win the Kenya Tournament.

At the end of the day, they remain the team to beat, and talk of their demise is very premature.

I would think it possible that Australia used the ICC Champions Trophy as a medium for experimentation, as in "can we afford to leave one or both Waughs out for the World Cup?" or "who would ultimately replace them/cover for them?"

Still the team to beat, IMO (although India and Sri Lanka have impressed the socks off me in recent weeks).

They still have to be favourites despite one appalling performance (it happens to everyone...)

I can't see them not reaching the semis as before that it's group stages but once it's the semi finals then it's anyone's - where one shocking performance (and we've seen plenty of late...) can send you home.

The VB series was so funny. The Aussie commentators were bragging, and going on and on about how great the bonus point system that was an aussie idea was... and it ultimately kept Aussie out of the final.

Personally, I reckon it's flawed. Anything that can make teams play to lose, heavily (à la NZ in the VB Series) can't be a good thing.

The amount of money in cricket, and that.

Anything that can keep Aussie out of a final is a good thing. But I would have been pissed off if I was an Aussie... their idea though:lol:

It's a good idea in leagues of more than 3 - as soon as there's only 3 teams in the group it becomes very open to abuse. I'm guessing that's why it's not been used in the Trophy.

True.
I am actually not a fan of bonus points in cricket- finalists can be picked on things such as run rate. Teams just shouldn't have the option of losing heavily to get through. Corruption needs to be kept out of cricket...:(!

Aus performed pathetically in VB series, and as for Kenya Tour, they eventually shared the trophy, so what's the point about it?

Demise?? Who the hell is talking about it? WE all know that Australia is a team with most talent, outgoes Waugh and step in Maher, u take off Warne and McGill, a class spinner can easily replace him. However, in a tournament like World Cup, i believe a team needs experiance players like Waughs.
Aus would never had won the World cup without Waugh in '99.I believe his presence is essential if Aus are to retain the title.Aus would ofcourse make it to the Semis in any case , but if they do go without Waugh, then i think Aus would struggle to retain the title!

Australia has the potential to go all the way even without the Waughs. If they run into an inspired team in the knockout phase(Pak, SL or India), they just might get knocked out. However, that could happen even with the Waughs around. I didn't include SA or NZ or England in the above list because these teams mostly play mechanically and very rarely come forward with an inspirational display and Aus would have to be collectively really low in form to be beaten by them.

In leagues of 4 or more, that wouldn't be likely to happen though as it's not just a case of only 1 team being knocked out, so the other 2 can work together.

As for your run rate suggestion, I believe that had that been used and no bonus points awarded, NZ would have been knocked out.
