Auction draft

Yes, I had more than 2 million left.

And Keith Miller + Imran Khan on the same team. I will accept your resignations now.

In the beginning, I had a plan, and I had targeted the following nine players: Imran Khan, Keith Miller, Adam Gilchrist, Glenn McGrath, Jack Hobbs, Malcolm Marshall, Len Hutton, Curtly Ambrose and Garry Sobers.

I thought if I could somehow grab three of them, preferably three bowlers, I would have an amazing team to build around - I had budgeted 66% of my budget for those three. I ended up getting five instead of three! People said I was splurging, and it seemed liked that only because the players I wanted, due to being so obviously good, were all auctioned off first.

Strategy, it works bitches!
  1. Len Hutton
  2. Vijay Merchant
  3. Shivnarine Chanderpaul
  4. Richie Richardson
  5. TBD
  6. Adam Gilchrist
  7. Imran Miller
  8. Keith Miller
  9. Darren Gough
  10. Lance Gibbs
  11. Glenn McGrath

You want fast bowling all rounders? I GOT fast bowling all rounders - the two best of all time. And my love of bowlers means I get to play five bowlers, but it doesn't hurt that much because two of them are pretty game changing with the bat and my wicketkeeper's batting is vital. I knew I'd have a long and good bowling attack, so I needed the best batsman wicketkeeper of all time to add strength to my batting lineup. It's not the strongest lineup, but it's deep as hell - with my #8 having scored 7 centuries in only 55 matches......imagine having him as a partner for guys like Gilchrist at #6.
Imran Miller sounds like a decent player. :p If you get a complete dud next round it's not over yet, if you get a decent to good player, I think you probably have the best lineup.

How does everyone rate Dudley Nourse? I think I overspent on him. I spent about 1.4 million.

The reason: I asked for my budget and I was told $4.5 million or so. I just assumed I had spent $4.5, instead I had spent $5.5 million.

So that one round, I probably spent a bit too much, cause I thought I had the money.

Anyone else with bids where they've realised they've spent too much, excluding non picks.

I'll be interested in finding out what each player went for, because as I alluded to in my post, I had pnanned 66% of my budget to go to three players, and I did that. However, I did it to be absolutely sure I got the players (my strategy depended on getting Gilchrist especially, and one of Miller or Khan, to make up for a comparatively less star studded batting). But in making large bids, I might have really overspent.

Poor Darren Gough, wont even get a bowl.

Here's my expenditure silentstriker. Given that I've posted how much money I have left it only makes sense to reveal how much I spent on each player.

1.S.Gavaskar 950001
2.H.Mohammad 300002
3.R.Kanhai 600001
4.Inzamam 500001
5.S.Waugh 900001
6.
7.F.Engineer 750000
8.R.Lindwall 1400001
9.C.Grimmett 1500003
10.J.Garner 1500001
11.S.Barnes 1000003

I didn't target specific players but had a more general strategy of bidding higher on the bowlers. My goal was to create a team with good batting and all time class bowling. This turned out much better than I expected.
That being said, I didn't want to spend too much on any single player. I felt it was important to maintain a little flexibility in my budget so that I could make a good spread of bids and avoid any muppets.

Well given that I nominated him ( adcock and harvey too, from your line-up) I rate him quite high. IMO South Africa's finest batsman before G.Pollock. I don't think he's worth what you paid, but he's not far off.

I can't say I'm unhappy with what I paid for any of my players. Wouldn't change a thing to be honest.

I'll include my successful bids too:
WG Grace - $1,001,111
Barry Richards - $1,200,004
K.S.Ranjitsinghi - $1,100,005
-
Allan Border - $1,200,048
Sir Garfield Sobers - $2,500,003
Godfrey Evans - $25,003
Hugh Tayfield - $500,040
George Lohmann - $1,500,002
John Snow - $600,002
Tom Richardson - $353,130

Grace is clearly my bargain at barely over $1million. In hindsight I bid too much on Lohmann but happy with how everything else has played out. Unlike most of the rest of the drafters, I had no strategy and bid one round at a time, nominated good players to avoid picking up a dud, and this is all after I misread the rules and seriously underbidded for my wicketkeeper in round one so was fortunate to get a player as highly rated as Evans.

4
5 Patsy Handren $595,000

1. Bill Lawry (5234 runs @ 47.15)
2. Geoff Boycott (8114 runs @47.72)
3. Ricky Ponting (11859 runs @55.67)
4. ?
5. Ken Barrington (6806 runs @ 58.67)
6. Doug Walters (5357 runs @ 48.26, 49 wickets at 29.08)
7. Jeff Dujon (3322 runs @ 31.94, 267 Catches, 5 stumpings)
8. Alan Davidson (1328 runs @ 24.59, 186 wickets @ 20.53)
9. Bill O’Reilly (144 wickets @ 22.49)

G.I.Joe

International Coach
plenty of excellent batsmen next round. daresay chances are i'll have perhaps the strongest and deepest batting lineup as well as a 5 man bowling attack of 3 quicks and 2 spinners.

Noble One

International Vice-Captain
My team going into round 11

1. Graeme Smith ($700,000)
2. Arthur Morris ($750,000)
3. Bob Simpson ($815,000)
4. Javed Miandad ($770,000)
5. Frank Worrell C ($1,150,000)
6.
7. Mark Boucher WK ($2,100,000)
8. Richie Benaud ($600,000)
9. Dennis Lillee ($1,050,000)
10. Shane Bond ($815,000)
11. Craig McDermott ($650,000)

The gameplan? After the first round disaster with receiving the default bid of $2.1M for Boucher, my plan for the next seven to eight rounds was to never bid more than $800K on any player. I knew my side would have its limitations, so I generally placed my highest bids on those players who might fly under the radar (Smith, Morris, McDermott and Benaud). I was able to save some funds in the process, allowing for a late charge for Worrell and Lillee.

This last pick is simply a bonus, my side doesn't have a missing link. Most of the players remaining will slot nicely into the number six role.

9. Harold Larwood (78 wickets @ 28.35)
10. Wes Hall (192 wickets @ 26.38)

Flintoff may actually be a worthwhile bet right now to give me another pace option.

Costs:

Stewie Dempster - 148,900
Wally Hammond - 1,900,300
Graeme Pollock - 1,200,200

Whatever it takes!!!
1. Sid Barnes
2.
3. Everton Weekes
4. Shane Watson
5. Carl Hooper
6. MS Dhoni (c) (wk)
7. Alok Kapali
8. Wasim Akram
9. Shane Warne
10. Michael Holding
11. Waqar Younis

SS... You may have all rounders but so do I.. Daresay my combo of Dhoni/Watson was the poor man's version of your Gilchrist/Miller.. I see your Imran and I raise my Hooper.. :p

Damn, but for the mess up with Kapali, this would have been a world beating team.. Seriously.. Weekes, Barnes, Watson, Dhoni (last two at least so far in their careers) have awesome averages and Hooper is not the worst when in this kinda company.. If I can luck out with another awesome middle order bat, I will have a great team inspite of Kapali.. Gotta say absolutely love the possibilities with my bowling attack. :)

And there is a small confusion reg. the budget left for me. Have mailed Marc at the email address of this draft.. Need his confirmation before I can post it here.. Per my calculations, I have a sizeable chunk left but not sure why Marc had it as much lesser... :(

I'll look into it when I get home, but rest assured it made no difference to the player you got in round 10, and if I need to edit your position in round 11 it's not public anyway!

If you email me what you think you've paid, I'll try to look into it sooner.

I'm surprised that players like Trueman and Herb Sutcliffe didn't make it through to the lists.
