Isn't that skill related though? You always hear about deliveries being too good for tailenders and how better batsmen might've edged it or even smashed it to the boundary. Or lack of skill on the bowlers part for making the ball do too much?

Judging by how often it gets mentioned by media and players alike, I'd suggest that Character is the most important attribute. Whatever that great intangible might hold.

It makes a difference for sure. But bowling that little bit fuller or straighter is only increasing your chance of getting a wicket. Key word: chance. Good bowling is giving yourself the best possible odds every time you roll the dice, it doesn't guarantee success.

Well, in the long run, it almost guarantees success. The best bowlers always end up with the most wickets. But in a one-off knockout match you can and will just get really lucky or unlucky a ton of the time. Whether a given ball moves 0.03 degrees or 0.031 degrees upon pitching can change who wins the World Cup.

Momentum.

England's CB Series win of 2007 was a prime example.
But they were playing a team that was being put through a boot camp every morning during that series in preparation for the WC.

Reckon momentum is madly over rated tbh. Look at the past Ashes summer - England won easily in Adelaide, Australia won easily in Perth, then England won both Melbourne and Sydney.

Don't really buy the 'luck' thing much but don't agree with 'momentum' either. Having a qualified psychologist in your team is the best attribute IMO.

In seriousness, The most important thing is having good cricketers, slight but important difference from having skilled cricketers.

'Peaking at the right time' is part and parcel of being a good cricketer.

Agree with Uppercut fully on skill and luck. More skill you have better 'chance' you have of succeeding. I therefore find it hilarious when at the end of a close match, all commentators say that the winning team held the nerves. Bull****. Most of the times it's just plain luck in such close games, unless you are South Africa :p.

On 'momentum' and 'peaking at the right time' - there is one similarity between the two. They both are hollow buzz words that mean precisely nothing. You can plan to bat and bowl well, but not to get a momentum or peak at the right time. These are effects of good results, not their causes.

It's impossible not to have confidence in players of the caliber of McGrath, Gilchrist and Hayden.
