Well it kind of is what is being discussed. Like other players have had periods similar to that of Harris (e.g. Southee last 3/4 years) and weren't as good before and afterwards. Who's saying that wouldn't have happened to Harris and co., only on a grander scale in all likelihood?
Well no, because we've accepted that they didn't maintain the standard for a long period. That's not in question afaic so speculation is irrelevant.

The discussion is whether, knowing they couldn't maintain it for various reasons, how much you hold that against them compared to longer serving players

Which harris? 2010-2015 ryan harris who actually was world class or 2000-2010 ryan harris who was basically mohammad sami level.
well for the purposes of the discussion i don't think what harris did at domestic level in 2004 particularly factors in for mine tbf

If you take out Bond's 1st 2 tests in Australia:

16 matches, 84 wickets @ 19.44

One of the biggest disappointments is that he never played a single test against England (injured or banned).

yea i've said this before and it caused a huge pile of sooking but ryan harris is solidly in the top 10, probably top 5 test quicks since i started watching. bond and shoiab are in the top 10 too. i rate people based on what they send down, and harris was absolutely relentless in a manner few have ever managed.

mcgrath
steyn
cummins
harris

yea, looks about right. granted, i never saw much peak pollock and that guy was a walking cheat code. atg bowler, can bat better than hadlee, geez **** off SA.

Harris had a Steynesque ability to take the pitch out of the equation. Classic condition proof MO. Asif obviously produced the most head scratching magic balls when it swung, conventional or reverse, or seamed. Also could look ehh on featherbeds though. This is all gut feel, of course, as Harris didn't play much in Asia and the same is true for Asif and MCG kind of roads. Bond looked the most pacy and lethal but also got the fewest opportunities to display his skillset in various conditions.

Still don't know who was the best tho.
Asif was a pure seam bowler, wasn't he? Never watched him bowl conventional swing.

Good thread. Probably Asif overall. Was the second coming of McGrath
I think had potential to be even better in the modern era than McGrath because of his tendency to bowl really full and target the stumps in an era where batsmen do not have the best defensive tendencies.

we all know what happens to Abbas when batsmen sit out of their crease now. Personally I think if Abbas was given more rope he would push through his current dry spell but we'll probably never know now that he's lost his contract. Point is it's brave to say Asif would have had the best career in the traditional sense given we have both a modern analogue and know how stupid the PCB are.
When did batsman start batting out of their crease against Abbas? I've just looked at his test match list, and the wickets appear to have dried up at the start of the New Zealand series in 2018. His record since then is represented in the filtered numbers.
