Ashwin's streak and position

GOAT Indian bowler is a tough one. Kumble has longevity, guys like Dev/Chandrasekhar/Bedi the more devastating peaks, and guys like Gupte/Amar Singh/Mohammad Nissar the fables behind them.

Hard to place Ashwin amongst these groups. I guess I'm willing to place him above the class of Srinath/Harbhajan/Zak I suppose.

Whatever it takes!!!
It's like calling Anderson one of the top 10 pace bowlers of last decade.
@GIMH

I have enjoyed this season very much so far. Both Anderson and Ashwin are showing what skill can do in conditions not tailor made for them, even if they are not the match winners in those conditions as they are in the ones more suited to their bowling styles. Have long felt that blokes like Warner, Sehwag, Anderson and Ashwin (and to an extent, Yasir) are unfairly ridiculed here for being matchwinners in certain conditions. Sure, its not the same as being a match winner everywhere, but surely being a matchwinner at home and a good support act abroad is still preferable to just being good both home and away.

Ashwin has been very crucial to India's plans in last 2-3 overseas tours too. Another couple of good overseas tours and I think he would seal his place as the best Indian bowler ever. Going to be second fastest to 400 wickets soon (behind Murali) while taking >5 wickets a match. Discount what is fair for home/away disparity but he still shines in comparison to other Indian bowlers of past. I think he can finish as India's first truly ATG bowler (as of now he is probably just shade below that recognition).

On bowling alone, here is my order among Indians, as things stand.

1. Ashwin
2. Kapil
3. Kumble
4. Bumrah
5. Jadeja

Jadeja and Bumrah to end up higher once they finish. Kapil and Jadeja in a different class as overall cricketers.

I remember the first time my dad read his name from a scorecard, around the time of his debut, he pronounced Kumble as if it rhymed with crumble.

Can't argue here if you want a team who is going to win. It's a shame to not squeeze VVS in but with really strong batting to 9 you can do this.

I wonder if by the time Pant has played 30 or 40 more tests he might even be considered over MS? Pant has that vibe you'd just want in your team, providing he can keep tidily enough. Sort of player who can really worry opposition bowlers.

Well if he makes the improvement as a keeper that the likes of Prior and Bairstow did then he will be. They were poor keepers to start with but worked hard and improved dramatically which Pant could do as he is still so young.

Today is the third time Ashwin has taken a Michelle and scored a ton in the same test. Only one IT Botham, who did it five times, has done it more often.

& Apparently the last player to take a five-for and score a century in a test against England before Ravi was Garfield Sobers.

Heady company.

Yeah if you watched his batting today, you'd be thinking he's a number 4 or 5 batsman. Ibcredibky smooth dealing of spinners.

Root was tactically so terrible and shoukdve attacked Ashwin with pace much more. They brought in Broad but made thr keeper stand up and led to a catch being dropped. Not to mention Stokds standing so close and missing an easy slip catch.

Crapinfo published an entire article eulogising Foakes but fact remains when it mattered, he screwed up two stumpings and a catch, which were defining in the context of the game. Had it been Pant, he would be getting savaged.
