Ashwin v Lyon

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
Indian batsmen are definitely much better than Australian batsmen at playing spin still IMO. Just look at the confidence and comfort that Sundar and Thakur showed when facing Lyon compared to a lot of the Aus batsmen against all the Indian spinners.

That’s probably more due to the Australian batsmen being deficient than the Indian batsmen being amazing, but the baseline gap remains IMO.
Its not mutually exclusive. Most players who come in having played loads of FC and debuting or in their initial years are good against spin. But the big 4 of Virat, Rohit, Rahane and Pujara who hardly play any FC and have played very little FC in the last 10 years or so, all have major issues against even decent quality spin.

Yeah but Smith makes up for it and closes the gap quite significantly.
Smith is like that one billionaire that makes the average income of a group/nation look respectable when most people are barely making ends meet

He's actually second top scorer for the series, which is just wild given that he had barely made double digit runs total at the halfway point.

In this case though, its an indictment of how much the other batters in his side have sucked. Like I said, the non leg spinning bowling Aussie batters all pretty much suck.

Oh yeah for sure. Although that's across both teams I believe

But we knew our batting would suck in Australia. :p
These stats really do underline how poor a series this has been from a batting quality POV. Cameron Green, averaging a mighty 33, is the fourth-top runscorer! If Pujara and Pant get out semi-cheaply it'll stay that way too.

That’s less to do with playing spin well and more to do with Lyon being crap.

They’d struggle to get that kind of comfort vs Ashwin and Jadeja if they were facing them. But then apparently they should just hit the latter over his head or something.

They should definitely do that ftr. The refusal to try and hit the Indian spinners straight down the ground and through the line, like every other touring finger spinner I can recall to ever visit Australia, has been a constant source of frustration.

Yep, while Ashwin etc have bowled better than previous tours, the batting has been worse with curious shot selection and many bad balls going unpunished.

Smith's a brilliant player of spin. He attacked Ashwin early in SCG and it definitely seemed to put him off his rhythm. No one else in the Australian team is even close to him in terms of spin playing ability (haven't seen enough of Labuschagne)

I really like how Pucovski plays the spinners, at least in Australia. He does a great job of manipulating length.

Hard hands could get him in trouble in Asia though; it's all very Ponting.
