And my amazing batting feats in the first class game continue. This one is truly amazing, so let me set the scene a little
The pitch was a road, great track for batting and I was up against Northants, who won the toss and promptly chose to bat, much to my chagrin. My bowlers toiled away for the best part of the day and had them all out for 379 just before the end of the day, with a couple of overs to be negotiated. Taking into consideration the strike rates for my batsmen this season, which are generally slow, I didn't fancy my chances of scoring enough runs quickly enough to have enough time leftover to chase a big total in the second innings, so I decided that my game plan should be to put a big score on the board in the first innings and bat Northants out of the game and bet on my bowlers to skittle them for an easy chase on the last day.
Things looked good as Newman looked ominous in the few overs before close, smacking a couple of boundaries straight away. He and Batty had a 55 run partnership opening the batting, until Batty who has been in good touch fell cheaply for 22. This sparked a mini collapse, with Newman departing soon after and Ali Brown and Mark Ramprakash, whose been a behemoth all season for us, both departing for low scores and leaving me precariously placed at 82/4.
Richard Clinton came to the crease to join Mark Butcher, who hadn't been in the best of touch for a few games and was low on form, and they set about restoring order for us in a handy partnership of 112 for the 5th wicket, with Butcher taking the lead. Things were looking good until Clinton fell just short of his 50, out for 46, and left us balancing on the edge again at 195/5. The game could have gone either way at this stage, another wicket and they would have been into the tail because Mahmoods been dire all season and I would have been in serious trouble. Instead, Rikki Clarke strode to the crease batting at number 7 and thus began the most immense partnership I could have ever wished for.
They batted through the end of day two, and all the way through to the last over of day three, Butcher finishing up on an epic 343*, and nearly gave me a heart attack by being dropped twice on 299, but in possibly the most soul destroying moment of my video gaming life, Rikki WAS out on 299, which signalled the end of a mammoth 595 run partnership which, if I checked the games records correctly, is the highest partnership for any wicket in county cricket history. The pair far exceeded my hopes for a big total and we ended up a 413 run lead and easily rolled them over in the second innings, with Rikki just generally cementing his status as superman and managing to take 4 wickets as we bowled them out for 264 and won by an innings and 149.
Was fantastic to watch unfold, even though the play and misses, LBW appeals and dropped catches were utterly nerve-wracking as the innings went on and on. Now if only I could manage this sort of thing in the OD game. xD Here's a screenshot of the batting card.
