I used to think Clarke was supreme against spin, but I am convinced that his previous ODI exploits make it look like he is better than he actually is. He's obviously quite good, no doubt. And when he's moving his feet, he stands out from other Australians who don't dare to dance down the pitch like he does. But the best non-subcontinental player? The stats don't back that up at all.

In 2005/06 when he toured Bangladesh, who are full of spinners, he averaged 25.50.

In 2008 when he toured India he averaged 35.85.

And in 2010 when he toured India again he averaged 8.75.

Now he isn't a complete failure against sub-continent teams, as he averaged 57.14 when he first toured India in 2004, and averaged 45.14 when India toured Australia in 2007/08 and a whopping 216 against Sri Lanka when they toured Australia in that same season.

But for mine he's not as consistent as the "best player of spin outside the subcontinent" tag suggests. He's also never toured Sri Lanka.

I'd still have Ponting ahead of him, who has come leaps and bounds in the last 4 years, and as I said earlier, KP and Amla.

He bowled brilliantly in that series and took 20+ wickets, where none of the other big-name Indian batsmen in the middle order could handle Murali and Mendis. Definitely not past his best.
As TEC alreayd said in that series in SRI. The wickets Murali took in that series was him feeding off the great work Mendis did.

Murali has been passed his pick since the 2008 series in WI. From the tour to Windies 08 The first signs i noticed was @ Trinidad 2008, when he struggled to bowl out WI on that last day. Since then a slow & steady decline in the zip & bounce he got in his bowling, which by time the tour to IND 09, he was clealry finished.

That proved successful only at the very beginning. Then spinners (Murali, Vettori and Shakib) took him by the scruff of the neck. Since then it had been a downward slide for him.
No. He developed a problem with left-arm spinners such a Vettori, Sakid, while getting out stupid shots againts other joke spinners. That tactic of being aggressive to spinners, would still be very successful for him, once he returns to form.

I wouldn't take much notice in that tour to BANG 05. He was dropped earlier in that AUS summer & just dropped in to play two tests in that tour in the absense to Martyn when he wasn't expected to play. In the 1st test BANG for once played like a test class team.

Plus although he only averaged 35 in IND 08, he played better than that.

The recent series in India was the first series when Clarke really looked a bit out of place againts spin.

I wouldve said Amla, but the WI spinners made him look very average early this year. His innings in India were impressive though.

My vote for AB DeVilliers.

Defensively I would say Chanderpaul. Plays very late with very good footwork, can just manouvre the turning ball without risk.

In terms of aggression, I think Clarke or Sarwan would be the best, but having seen the stats earlier looks like I have overated Clarke a lot. So probably Sarwan, and Pieterson is worth a mention having got the better of Warne, and been even with Murali,. His exploits against Yuvraj probably takes his rating down.

Interesting how the 2 players I picked are of Indian descent. They don't really bat like West Indians who wind up and smoke it, and in general don't play spin too well.
