Alltime ODI XI

All time ODI XI

1) SR Tendulkar - R/LG His record speaks for itself 14,270, at 44.48, striking at 85.88. In my eyes, nobody even comes close as the greatest limited overs batsman of all time.

2) GA Gooch* - R/M Simply the best English limited player of all time, and one of the hardest hitters of a cricket ball I have ever seen. Could demolish great attacks on seaming pitches (see his 154* at headingley against Ambrose, Patterson, Walsh and Marshall and you may get the idea), perhaps the best ever opener behind Tendulkar?

3) IVA Richards - R/S Bowlers said that the batsman they most hated bowling to was Isaac Alexander Vivian Richards. Some of the shots I saw him play, would have made any limited overs fielding captain cringe. His ability to hit the ball anywhere on the legside was unmatched.

4) RS Dravid - A perfect foil for other attacking batsmen in the middle order, and a calming influence for when the chips are down. Has the rare talent of being able to switch from defensive to attacking mode smoothly, and can play big shots and hit big sixes when he wants/needs to.

5) AC Gilchrist+ - Les Ames apart, Gilchrist is the best Wicket-Keeper batsman of all time. Can take the game away from side in matters of minutes and a superb wicket-keeper. Could get into the side with batting alone.

6) MEK Hussey - May be new on the international block, but nonetheless a supreme finisher of the innings. Can score quickfire 30s and 40s, but can also score more patient hundreds may the middle order fail to fire.

7) MG Bevan - S/LC The though of him and Hussey together in the last 10 overs doesn't bear thinking about in the lower order, can do exactly the same as the afforementioned.

8) Wasim Akram - L/F A supreme exponent of swing and seam, and is capable of ultimate control of line and length on his day. Maybe the best List - A bowler of all time?

9) CEL Ambrose - R/F A smaller version of Joel Garner, but by no means less effective, can bowl at either end of the innings, and capable of ripping out teams in just overs.

10) J Garner - R/F Has the best stats for an ODI bowler, and for a reason. Playing a 6' 10" pace bowler was never easy, but when they have a white ball, and ultimate control of line and length, it is made doubly hard.

11) M Muralidaran R/OB - Has the most international wickets of all time, and will no doubt end up being the highest wicket taker in ODIs and Tests of all time.

I think ive done one before but i will do it again:
Tendulkar
Lara- Its where hes performed best, and i cant see why you wouldnt want to give him as much time as possible to get set
Viv Richards
Michael Bevan - Bevan at 4 batting first, but perhaps a swap with Andy Flower and Jonty Rhodes depending on the situation batting 2nd
Andy Flower- Cant put Gilchrist in there when you have openers of the class of Lara and Tendulkar. Flower is just as good a replacement
Jonty Rhodes - Undoubtedly the best fielder ever and IMO hes shades ahead of Ponting and the rest. His running between the wickets and placement make him essential IMO
Lance Klusener - I dont think there are too many lower-middle order batsmen with an average of over 40.
Wasim Akram
Curtly Ambrose
Joel Garner
Mutthiah Muralitharan- much better than warne in ODIs IMO. can get a little repititive but his record speaks for itself

12th man- Javed Miandad- i dont really know how i cant fit him in because i honestly think hes amongst the top 5 ODI players ever, but theres no one in that side that i can get rid of so hed have to be on the sidelines.

Interesting XI there....different, but it makes sense.

What would be your's ?

This would be mine:

Tendulkar < no reason needed>
Gillchrist < there are openers who've scored more than him but his decent average-35-ish, combined with run-a-ball strike rate and wicketkeeping ability makes him a perfect candidate with team balance in mind>
Viv Richards <enough said>
Lara < at this stage, i still rate Lara as the next best ODI batsman after the big 3>
Bevan < enough said>
Ponting < this is a slot i am not sure about but Ponting is my pick>
Kapil Dev < IMO he is the perfect # 7 - an excellent containing bowler and a blaster good for a quickfire 25-30. Has the mettle to play huge and important knocks too>
Wasim < his bowling + big-hitting tonks are good enough to get into any ODI side>
Waqar < can be expensive at times but his ability to wreck a batting lineup consistently is something that i dont think anyone has come close to emulating apart from Brett Lee>
Murali < i rate him above Warne, especially in ODIs- has significantly superior economy to Warne in ODIs>
Garner < best ODI bowler in my eyes>
The only change I'd make is replacing Ponting with Dean Jones. Perhaps Waqar with Bond as well, although he hasn't really played enough to make that call yet.

tendulkar - the greatest one day opener ever
haynes - one of the greatest one day openers ever - very, very underrated
richards - no explanation required
lara - in my opinion, would walk into the team
bevan - a welcome addition for any one day side
gilchrist - explosive batsman, good 'keeper
imran - captain, one of the greatest allrounders ever
akram - one of the greatest bowlers in one day cricket
garner - one of the measliest bowlers in one day cricket
mcgrath - rivals big bird in accuracy
murali - greatest spinner ever

other potential candidates - miandad, ponting, warne, waqar, ambrose...but pretty happy with the above xi...

I really can't find anything wrong with this.
I am surprised you didn't want to kick Kapil and Tendulkar out!

Has kind of a modern era test XI look to it. Decided to go with Jones in favor of Bevan because I feel the later is a tad overrated. Went with Imran over Klusener or Kapil due to being better with the ball than Klusener and having the general leadership advantage over them both.

Kapil should make it ahead of Imran IMO. The # 7 would be required to biff a few towards the end of the innings, and Kapil has a batting SR of 95 to Imran's 72. A batting SR of 72 is a crime in an all time ODI XI.

Agree with this team, although Aravinda de Silva for Ponting and probably Hadlee for Akram may be given a thought.

That S/R of 72 can be a bit misleading though. There were many times he had to stick around and building an inning when the top order failed, which required some defensive batting. But TBF, I'm sure Kapil has had to do the same.

Lol, relax Lillian, just choose who you want. But its just a bit weird seeing players who never played the game, kind of defeats the purpose of the exercise.
I'm always relaxed, and I've shaken hands with Princess Anne.:-O
I didn't think this exercise had a purpose though, although we could spend 36 hours sifting through the stats and coming up with the best team.
It's sometimes interesting - well mildly anyway - to think about which players from the past would have thrived in the One-Day game. The difference is that we know which One-Day players thrive at Test level because if they're good enough they will have had the opportunity, whereas Test players from a bygone age never had the chance to show what they could do in One Day cricket.

I don't know what point you're making with that particular stat, but Boycott, Brearley and Pringle all played in a World Cup Final. How scarey is that?

Yeah, I thought about that too, but I opted to go with the more solid batsman, considering I surrounded him with Viv, Gilly, Akram, and Lara further up the order. Anyone of those guys could score 40-45 runs by themselves in the last ten.
