All time world test XI selection

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
No but the main justification for having Wasim in the attack (his left arm variety) isnt as compelling if Sobers is already likely to bowl. Though frankly I think the left-arm thing is overrated.

Imran gives you reverse plus is the best bowling all-rounder ever.
If reverse swing is so great, surely left arm reverse swing is even greater?

Interesting people are choosing Hammond. Great batsman but he made a great deal of runs against new nations in test cricket and also scored a bucketload in 1928/29 against a poor Australian attack in timeless matches. Not worthy of a place in the first XI, IMO.
I would say he paid for 1928-29 after returning in 46-47 in his stats. In hindsight you could say he didn’t need to return but he did it for cricket.I guess many are chosing Hammond including me cause he was a really good bowler.can easily be the 6th bowler and an ATG in slips+an ATG batsman.

The normal awards that everyone else has
CricketWeb First XI (Tests)

Jack Hobbs
Len Hutton
Don Bradman
Sachin Tendulkar
Gary Sobers
-
Adam Gilchrist +
Imran Khan
Shane Warne
Malcolm Marshall
Glenn McGrath

- Pick the final player to complete the World 1st XI. Sobers can either bat at 5 or 6 in the first XI, depening on who people choose here.

- Select a player from the XI to be captain (can be your final choice)

Warne/Murali from both end when pitch assists spin will make this side invincible. Hadlee in the lineup would have been better for balance but even without Hadlee, I would like to add Murali to the line up.

I don't believe in playing people out of positions where they did their best.

Steve Waugh is the best number 5/6 batsman ever in test cricket. Can also bowl to boot.

At his very best don't think there was anyone better, and we need a 2nd elite slip fielder. Adding another leftie doesn't hurt either.

May change depending on how the vote turns out.

Hutton.

Was Bradman that great of a captain, or is it seniority due to his stature as a cricketer?
I reckon it's a bit of both. No doubt his cricketing stature has an impact - and it certainly helped that the post-war side he led was so bloody good - but on the other hand he seems from all I have seen and read to have been very highly rated as a captain by most.

Bradman was a really clever captain. Was really really competitive. His stature as a cricketer undeniably has helped him more.

"A good captain must be a fighter; confident but not arrogant, firm but not obstinate; able to take criticism without letting it unduly disturb him, for he is sure to get it — and unfairly, too."

Fair point. I hate it when openers are picked as middle-order bats just to shoehorn them into the XI. But, for me, a middle order player should be able to bat anywhere from 3 to 6 in most cases.

Thus,

Viv Richards

Don Bradman

Lara and Smith were very close. But I don't think anyone bar Bradman dominated bowlers over a sustained period of time like Viv in his prime. And can you imagine a 5-7 of Viv, Sobers, and Gilchrist? ****ing hell.
