From memory, he batted there quite a few times when he couldn't crack the opening spot due to Sachin and Sourav.

He was the last batsman to be selected at no. 3. Before him, all the cakes were selected around him - Haynes, Ranatunga, Rohit (not a rapid starter), Yousuf. Why not an icing like Sehwag in the middle of that batting order rather than another cake? He was great against spin too - so I don't see why he'd be any less successful at number 3 in the long run.
