All Time Pak XII vs All Time Ind XII

JBH001

International Regular
Well in the welter of All Time Sides currently going on, no one seems to have brought up the sub continental teams.
Seeing as we have just had a great series between the two nations how about an all time one?
The teams will contest 2 back to back 3 test series.
One in India and the return in Pakistan.

My Teams.

1. Hanif Mohammed
2. Saeed Anwar
3. Inzi ul Haq
4. Zaheer Abbas
5. Javed Miandad
6. Imran Khan (c)
7. Wasim Akram
8. Wasim Bari (wk)
9. Waqar Younis
10. Fazal Mahmood
11. Abdul Qadir
12. Sarfraz Nawaz

7. Syed Kirmani (wk)
8. Javagal Srinath
9. Anil Kumble

Mohammad Nissar was actually born in Lahore - he did play for pre-partition India but I suspect he would have played for Pakistan if had that option.

Pakistan have by far the better bowling lineup -- although I would have Gupte in place of Bedi for India.
The batting is a lot closer though.

Pakistan to win overall.

What's your reasoning behind having Tendulkar captain?

To be honest because there really is no stand out skipper in that group.
Tendulkar as the best batsman therefore gets the nod - Kapil would find it a burden and I dont think Gavaskar had what it takes.
Hopefully Tendulkar would find the burden of captaincy alleviated by having people like Gavaskar, Kapil and Kirmani around him.
Dravid as the Vice Captain btw.

English Rose thanks for the heads up on Nissar - I did not know he was born in Lahore. However as he represented India he plays for India in my team.
(if that is impossible - for whatever reason - Ghavri comes into the playing XI and Prasanna is my 12th man)

Ooh. I can't agree with that.

Remember, Kapil Dev was a world cup winning captain, and a real leader of men. He had the fire in the belly that makes a great captain, and I'd have him over Tendulkar any day. I reckon Tendulkar would be far more likely to find the captaincy a burden.

Apart from that I reckon your Indian team is great.

With your Pakistan team I don't think I'd have Imran at number six. He was good enough for a top six spot in most teams, but not good enough for a top six spot in an all time team.

My team would be :

1. Hanif Mohammed
2. Saeed Anwar
3. Inzi ul Haq
4. Zaheer Abbas
5. Javed Miandad
6. Saleem Malik
7. Imran Khan (c)
8. Wasim Akram
9. Wasim Bari (wk)
10. Waqar Younis
11. Abdul Qadir
12. Fazal Mahmood

(I fully admit that this is copied, pasted and edited from JBH001's team. I am by nature a lazy bugger.)

umm kapil dev won the world cup for india in 83 with not a very talented side.

just because hes the best batsman(although for me he is no match for dravid or gavaskar) doesnt mean he should be captain....hes been a terrible captain in the past as has lara.

umm gavaskar doesnt have what it takes while tendulkar does? so what has tendulkar ever done as a captain to warrant that?

Pakistan would win comfortably IMO as they have a bowling attack as well as batsmen...

IMO, Wasim and Waq would be enough for Indian batsmen and tendulkar in his prime would be enough for Pakistani bowlers.

Although a fantasy this XI, but anybody's game

I would put Jimmy Amarnath ahead of Gundappa Viswanath, because to face a very good fast bowling attack like Pakistan, Amarnath is a much better option then Viswanath.

Hmmm..... Ijaz Ahmed and Yousuf Youhana are in at the expense of Javed Miandad and Zaheer Abbas ....this must be the best day of their life :p :p

Ah thanks for that Pommie.
Nissar can play in my team then.

As for the captaincy comments you are all correct.
Tendulkar should not be captain - it has best go to Kapil.

Though Jimmy Amarnath was a good player of pace I dont believe Vishy was slack in this department either - though later in his career as his reflexes slowed he was more susceptible to pace.
Some of his best knocks were against the WI attack, albeit, predominantly on Indian pitches. But then this series is being played on the sub continent and that really is not an issue.
Besides he is a better batsman than Amarnath and along with Gavaskar, Dravid and Tendulkar is imo one of the 4 Best Indian Batsman ever. He deserves inclusion.

As to the long tail - Srinath is needed to bolster an already, comparatively, weak bowling attack. Ghavri is 12th man as he was a decent bat - and if needs be steps into the side to fill that void in the lower order.

Pakistan attack has a bit of a lack of variety in four new ball bowlers. I would replace Sarfaraz with either Saqlain or Iqbal Qasim.

For India, I would replace Vishwanath with Vijay Hazare. I am tempted to replace Merchant with Mankad since it gives more flexibility to the side and can get in another batsman by dropping Bishan.

I would replace Shrinath and Ghavri with much better bowlers even if they are not new ball bowlers. No Indian side would ever have prefered these two over Gupte, Chandrashekhar or Prasanna. Take your pick !

On who will win, well who can say. India have better spinners, Pakistan a better new ball attack. The batting sides are a toss up with Indian batting a bit more impressive sounding :p

Eyes not spreadsheets
The thing is India's spin attack isn't that much better than Pakistan's, but Pakistan's pace attack is far far superior to India's!
