Don't really want to get into any debate or questioning anyone's choice, but why is Viswanath getting rated higher than Pujara?? Just interested in the argument.

In his time, he was really seen as the second batting star after Gavaskar. His batting fell away as time went on but after 60 or so tests, he was a high 40s batsman at a time when that meant something (so was Kanhai and Clive Lloyd etc).

Quietly, India XI has acquired amazing batting depth. If we play Kumble for Shami we'd have 10 test centurions and 11th guy with world record of scoring most runs in an over.

A more interesting question would be which are the places in the India XI that can change in the future?

I'd say biggest chances would be Sehwag, Kohli and Shami. Sehwag by another high averaging opener with a better overseas record. Shami with another fast bowler averaging below 25. Kohli with another 50+ averaging middle order bat.

Next in line would be Dravid and Dev.

Then Ashwin/Jadeja/Pant I guess. Spinners with better overseas penetration yes but with the same batting power. That's tougher. Similarly a WK-bat as good.

Gavaskar/Tendulkar can get into an All Time XI and Bumrah if he continues his trajectory can also be a candidate. These 3 are already perfect as is.

If Pant keeps evolving he can also be in this tier-1 category.

As an Indian fan, I feel someone like Kapil is far tougher to replace than someone like Jadeja/Pant in the all time xi because we simply don't produce fast bowling all rounders. The only decent ones we have had since Kapil are probably Irfan and Pandya, who are tiers below him. For jadeja, you might get an Axar type player in the future who might surpass him or for Pant, someone from the IPL chain who has a decent keeper has a chance maybe.

Just for context, Mankad averages 40+ opening and has centuries in Australia and England; while he Averaged mid 20s in MO. Middle order batting order may get updated based on team composition.
