All time England ODI XI

Rob Wesley

School Boy/Girl Captain
Let’s make an all time ODI XI for England:-

Gooch
Trescrothik
Root
KP
Morgan(c)
Stokes
Buttler(wkt)
Flintoff
Swann
Gough
Anderson

12th man - Botham.

Pick yours.

International Regular
roy
bairstow
root
morgan (c)
flintoff
stokes
buttler (w)
plunkett
rashid
swann
gough

trescothick, gooch and knight were all fine ODI openers but roy and bairstows stats and S/R as a partnership at their peak were monstrous.

if flintoff gets in he has to bat #5. he scored 1.8k runs at a 46 avg and 96 s/r. all 3 of his centuries came there. his stats elsewhere barely befit a batsman. buttler is probably 1 slot too low but he could float up the order if need be.

stokes and flintoff in the top 6 allows you to get away two spinners, both of whom are near the top of englands admittedly underwhelming list of best ODI bowlers.

plunkett is just a top middle overs bowler although he might leave you low on new ball options. anderson or willis probably your best alternatives there.

gough was a legit gun in ODIs. him and flintoff in the death overs would be a very strong double act.

I kind of feel like you have to ignore that a little as they're playing at a different time. I have no doubt Trescothick could've matched that style and I'd pick him over Bairstow (which also gives a left/right partnership).

When you look at the Top ODI bowlers, the record which stands out is Flintoff's, his average so much better than the others. Rashid's record is gradually waning and I'd have Swann above him. I'm trying to work out how you get KP into that middle order, but his record is pretty similar to Morgan's who obviously stays for his captaincy skills (as opposed to being a divisive ****).

Also still crazy that Anderson is top wicket taker, easy to forget , but his average not as good as Willis. Botham at 8 would be a pretty handy late hitter and his bowling stats are solid.

Trescothick, Roy, Root, Morgan*, Stokes, Buttler+, Flintoff, Botham, Swann, Gough, Willis

Roy, Bairstow, Root, KP, Morgan, Flintoff, Jos, Swann, Anderson, Gough, Willis

That's a really shitty bowling lineup for an all time XI, ngl. I think only Bangladesh has a worse attack among top 8-10 countries.

There's only one England player who has bowled in 2 World Cup Finals, and I don't think he's going to get a spot here (Phil De Freitas).

Even for their time Roy and Bairstow were ahead of the curve.

Silver Silva

International Vice-Captain
1.Johnny Bairstow
2.Marcus Trescothick

5.Jos Buttler (WK)
6.Paul Collingwood (C)
7.Andrew Flintoff
8.Graeme Swann
9.Darren Gough
10.Adil Rashid
11.Derek Underwood

Underwood didn't play a lot of ODI cricket but he would be a nightmare to score off in the middle overs

1.Jonny Bairstow
2.Jason Roy
3.Joe Root
4.Eoin Morgan (C)
5.Ben Stokes
6.Jos Buttler (WK)
