Australia from about the time Spofforth/Turner retired until the Second World War seems to have a much higher quality of spinner to seamer.

Really it was only between Benaud and Warne that our spinning stocks were sparse. Even then, there was Mallett and Yardley who had some success.

Taylor was my favourite cricketer as a kid. I was upset that he'd been dropped for Warne for a little while.
