I think Cook has done an excellent job overall. English cricket is in a good place right now IMO. Any team would have struggled after the spate of retirements post the 5-0 series, but they've uncovered a lot of talented players since then and bounced back very quickly.

As long as he keeps playing I'm happy. He never was a great captain, but he's been a great player for a long time.

He seemed pretty chilled out during the interview with Nasser on Sky. Hopefully it translates to runs.

Yeah the downturn as far as home games were concerned was basically only one series and they regrouped quite well. All the struggles on tour since could easily have been predicted beforehand so aren't a disaster and as I said somewhere the new captain (probably Root) won't have many tours to Asia in the coming years so can rely on the strong pace attack. I guess the new captain would prefer the series to be other way round this summer to ease himself in but if they struggle against SA they should be able to beat WI and gain confidence before heading to Australia.

So Root, Stokes and Broad have all been interviewed for the job. Root would have to have had a real bad one not to get the job ahead of the other pair.

Broad a better bet than Root imo, especially for Australia this winter - we need a skipper with a bit of mongrel in him, and despite the baby face there's always been plenty of that in Broad
