Agarkar : I am now a bowler and not an allrounder

Salamuddin

International Debutant
It will be interesting to see what his role will be in Chappell's new regime.

I don't think he should be in India's test squad, but I still feel he could have something to offer
the ODI squad with a view to world cup 2007.
I'd like to see him bowl in the middle overs and at the death rather rather at the beginning.

Agree completely. He and Zaheer seem to be our best options as death bowlers. Too bad that neither of them like bowling the first few overs of the game.

They don't need him if they have to win tournaments. In the last five years, when he has been more or less a regular in the Indian ODI side, they have won just two major ODI series, not counting a washed-out series against the Windies. We have seen him bowl a few good spells, and then utter rubbish, which lets teams off the hook. His figures may look good, but dig deeper and they don't, and you then know why they don't win tournaments. They can definitely afford to keep him out of their plans and try out a few rookies, and it won't hurt them much.

  • Zaheer- Can be quite a handful with the new ball, and has often bowled some good spells where he had the batsmen on their toes, and his yorkers can take wickets. A combination of yorkers, boucners and swing can get that extra wicket, but he's helpless when the ball is more than a few overs old- he averages 26 with the new ball, but it shoots up to 40 when it gets old. Decent final-overs vowler.
  • Agarkar- Lacks the power and control to make the new ball talk. Can bowl a few freak spells that can upset the batting, but he's also bowled several buffet overs that give batting teams breathing space. Inconsistent in the final overs, and has been taken for lots of runs by the likes of Abdul Razzaq and Flintoff.
  • Nehra- Bowls better with the old ball. Needs to get back to full pace to be at his best. Under-rated bowler in the final overs.
  • Balaji- Figures indicate he's a misfit in ODI's, but he bowls better (averaging 25 at 1.5 wickets a match) with the old ball. May be a good final-overs option.
  • Irfan- Can use the new ball to good effect, getting good movement, but can do nothing with an old ball. Unsafe in the final overs.
  • Joginder- Can bowl good spells with the new ball, but struggles when it gets old. Lacks white-ball-OD experience, but should be considered as a future prospect.
  • JP Yadav- Rush him in! He may lack pace, but can swing the ball well, and is effective with both the new and old ball. Don't expect him to take two wickets in the first over he bowls, but he's good enough to play as a frontline seamer.
