..With Hart... he seems reliable but has struggled and dropped catches.. no more mongrel behind the stumps anymore..

Well, he didn't win the match to my knowledge, but Nayan Mongia did grind out 150odd against Australia when he was asked to open...

But is that more due to the strength of the other batsmen in the South African side relative to the Kiwi top orders of that time?

IMO the downfall of Parore's 'keeping was his batting, and visa versa - if he could have concentrated wholely on one or the other we likely wouldn't be debating the toppic about how relatively good he was......IMO his batting was good enough to be selected as a specialist, but there were precious little options regarding the gloves at the time so he had to try to combine the 2........and not too shabby either........

in the end his personal life / problems off the pitch beat both......& he needed to get away from the game / spotlight to get himself sorted..........

as well as his innings at Perth, I also liked his partnership with Cairns when NZ won the ICC Trophy...........

Yes his personal life/ outside life did have a bearing on his decision to retire, and he did get too bored.... i thought about mentioning Alec Stewart but never really followed him... and for the record that Eng/NZ test series went like this.... 1st test Eng won.. 2nd test draw... 3rd test NZ won, series drew 1all

I've read the Parore autobiography, and frankly the man has the attitude of a toolhead....no wonder the NZ selectors were loathed to continue with him.

'Loathed to continue with him'? Wasn't it Parore who retired and not NZ cricket who loathed him? May have had the attitude of a toolhead (he was from Auckland, after all ), but he was a damn fine wicketkeeper.

Actually no.

The Official sledgeing ratings at the time of Parore's retirement have Warne at number 6 , behind Parore , Chris Cairns , Flintoff , Steve Waugh & Glenn McGrath :P

Parore was the 3rd best keeper I have ever seen , not quite as good as Russell or Healy , but slightly better than Moin Khan & Dave Richardson.

He didnt fulfil his ability with the bat , but he was used as the floater in the order & probably never quite felt comfortable anywhere.

Adam's a lot more than just a lawyer or commentator by the sounds of things. Apparently if he sold his art collection he could "buy the rest of the street, just about". "I could've sat in an office earning $100,000 a year, but that's just not me." - NZ Herald interview.

I imagine that's mostly just w*nky Parnell patter, but I guess it also means he doesn't want to spend any more days keeping to Scotty Styris!
