They were never close lol. Greenidge was always a HTB, his record at that point also compares poorly with Gavaskar’s overall record. And lol @ the Ponting/Richards thing - Greenidge’s SR was 50, Gavaskar’s was 45, big whoop.

Bloke made 50+ scores less often than all the other great openers (even below the vaunted big four). He never was and never will be comparable to Gavaskar.

There's a difference between being better at home and being a HTB. Gordon's work in England and New Zealand is too good to be labelled a home bully. Did fine in India too (I know they didn't have Ashwin, Jadeja and Bumrah back then but still). I agree that he's certainly a rung (or two) below Gavaskar though.

Personally, I think this comparison is very close. But the merits of ABD might be being a bit overlooked. Went with him only because he's the less voted on player. Him and Greenidge are both basically equal in my mind.
