I think Lee is a top ODI bowler but you compared him with the wrong guy in my view. One of my unpopular opinions here
Lee at least as good as McGrath
My unpopular opinion: No one is better than McGrath.

Murali was a wicket-taking machine but I cant seem to recall any big match performance from him in a long career. Hence my hesitation to put him in the spot.McGrath is the best, then Wasim, Garner and Pollock amongst fast bowlers.
Among spinners Murali, Saqlain and then day light.
You mean big match performances are the ones against sorry sides who cannot play spin?Murali was a wicket-taking machine but I cant seem to recall any big match performance from him in a long career. Hence my hesitation to put him in the spot.
Saqlain was magic but, as much as I am a fan of his, I believe he benefited from a period of the late 90s when batsmen simply hadn't adjusted to the doosra which almost became close to a stock ball of his in ODIs, so I am not sure he would be as successful had he played a decade later.
I think Warne should be in the conversation. Not the prettiest stats but three clutch World Cup knockout performances will always give him a case. Watching him in ODIs, I didn't feel he would run through a side but would take the most important wickets at the key moments.
Xavier Doherty wasWarne wasn't even the best Aus ODI spinner
I know they 'turned up at the right time' but I'm not sure how much importance I place for 'clutch singular performances' for the Aussies (ever since they got good) who had the benefit of not really needing to turn up half the time (as someone else would pick up the slack). Any other team and them not turning up almost every match is the team being knocked out.Not the prettiest stats but three clutch World Cup knockout performances will always give him a case.
Aus would have lost both 1996 and 99 WC SF if not for Warne.I know they 'turned up at the right time' but I'm not sure how much importance I place for 'clutch singular performances' for the Aussies (ever since they got good) who had the benefit of not really needing to turn up half the time (as someone else would pick up the slack). I'd say it was Mark Waugh. Had to wear sunglasses to protect himself from the glare of his own awesomeness.Xavier Doherty was
Not a fan of this logic at all. They were such a good team because they generally all did "turn up" all the time. It's a misconception to think that being in a good team means you don't have to try as hard. If even a few of the players thought that way then they wouldn't be as good a team, that's what differentiated them.I know they 'turned up at the right time' but I'm not sure how much importance I place for 'clutch singular performances' for the Aussies (ever since they got good) who had the benefit of not really needing to turn up half the time (as someone else would pick up the slack). Its easier to get better stats if you are playing in a great team. Ponting, McGrath, Marshall.. All benefitted from that. Not a fan of this logic at all. Who is the greatest ODI bowler of all time?
A comprehensive analysis that takes into account era, opposition strength, quality of wickets, big-tournament performances, and longevitywww.espncricinfo.com
They lost the 96 Final because of Warne were taken for cleaners by left handers and he dropped Ranatunga.Aus would have lost both 1996 and 99 WC SF if not for Warne.
Don't think it is a factor when you7 compare Murali, Warne and Saqlain. All three played at least part of their careers in ATG teams. Its easier to get better stats if you are playing in a great team. Ponting, McGrath, Marshall.. All benefitted from that.
Also the dew factor. They lost the 96 Final because of Warne were taken for cleaners by left handers and he dropped Ranatunga.
Take dew away, even then Ranatunga, Gurusinha and Tillekaratne had a penchant of bashing Warne. Also the dew factor.
They are a benchmark, along with overall stats, etc. Because of the surfeit of meaningless ODIs that became more common post 2000, I prefer players who have delivered in the highest pressure matches as well. World Cup, ICC trophies, and knockout matches are higher stake games. If clutch singular performances in WC finals and semis are the benchmark, the God will be Aravinda de Silva.
ODIs post ~2005 became a joke. Outside of world cups you rarely see full strength sides. They are a benchmark, along with overall stats, etc. Because of the surfeit of meaningless ODIs that became more common post 2000, I prefer players who have delivered in the highest pressure matches as well.
