Franklin is too valuable to put in the ruck, but his also too valuable to be kept out of the game. He should initially start forward and stay there if Hawthorn are doing well and his in the game. If things aren't going so well and his not on fire in the forward line then he should be used as a ruckman because his good enough to play in the midfield and set up play. Nothing permanant, just for a short spell or two during the game, considering that we only have 1 ruckman.

Hawthorn should make a move for David Hale next season. Perhaps trade Xavier Ellis.

If I was the opposition coach and Franklin was in the ruck, I reckon I'd be telling my ruckman to get my knee and elbow into Franklin as many times as possible.

Not worth the risk.

In hindsight, yeah, but that's only because of what has since happened to Lovett.
Really? Lovett being such a liability of a person that his AFL career would be cut short of what his talent merited was a surprise? I was shocked anyone was willing to trade so much for him, I thought he'd be a Cousins last-selection roll of the dice type.

Agreeing about Franklin in the ruck. Put a knee through him at the first bounce IMO, the way Trent Knobel did to Jared Brennan back in the day.

Why any club would want Lovett or Williams is beyond me.

Saints didn't need him, and Essendon weren't exactl in a position to 'top up'

Says a lot about how highly I rate Williams as a footballer. But yeah, probably true.

Hmm, reckon he has been in the past year or two. But he used to be a lot fitter and quicker than what he's seemed over the past 18 months, was almost impossible to stop off the lead. Was pretty effective in what was a poor team at the time.

Essendon didn't need to top up but they wanted shot of Lovett because they knew he was a time bomb. It was either trade him for whatever they could get for him or delist him.

Yeah, good point, but wouldn't the opposition do the same to Dean Cox?

I guess that's where experience comes into it. Cox has done it for so long that he knows how to position himself when a bloke is trying to jump into him, and probably still win the tap and give his midfielders super service.

Franklin doesn't have that experience, and jumping into him would probably mean that as well as inflicting pain upon Franklin, the ruck contest would probably still be a 50/50 ball.

Hale not needed when Petrie is up and running.

Love Petrie. I used to pay him out a bit back in 2006. Then he became awesome.

Just wondering on whether you think Xavier Ellis is worth sacrificing a quality player such as Hale for?
We've got plenty of players like Ellis. We need a ruckman and getting a quality ruckman through the draft is going to be difficult with the new teams coming into the competition.

I understand the sentiment, but Hale isn't the player that you should be targetting. He hasn't been a full time ruckman for quite a while, and has never been one. Also, he'll have an inflated price on his head, because he's originally from the Gold Coast, so to get him you'd have to pay over the odds.

You don't look to get quality ruckmen through the draft to play right now; only way that happens is if you have a top 5 draft pick (Nic Nat, Kreuzer). You guys will look at the pre-season and rookie drafts, for either delisted players or those from the feeder leagues (VFL, SANFL, WAFL) if you require one that you wish to have an immediate impact. You effectively did it this year with Skipper, but he's done a bad hamstring before Round 1, which was horrible luck.

Is Bailey a chance of making it back this year? Really hope it goes well for the poor fella.
