What's with the new trend this year with TV commentators calling well-known players by their nicknames and not their names? Heard Stevie J, Chappy, Tomahawk, J-pod etc today at the Geelong game, obviously McAvaney has a huge hard-on for "Buddy" and "Cyril", and when Roos calls Swans games he calls every player by their nickname. BT does it too. I don't mean in analysis either, I mean in play-by-play calling.

Just seems really weird, especially when it's done for some players/clubs and not others. Was there some pre-season focus group that decided the punters like the familiarity or something? Because it gives me the ****s.
Completely agree.

there's something about coaches/'the suits' calling players by their nickname in press conferences and the like that annoys me.

Hunt has played a good third quarter so far.

Been an enjoyable game to watch. It's like Richmond v Melbourne - you can watch it knowing neither side is much chop, so you can be a bit forgiving about it.

Cue Richmond to beat Sydney now I've said that.

Chad Cornes v Jared Brennan

That's the difference between the sides. Overlooking age stuff, you've got Cornes, big body, very smart, knows where to go and when to hit, and then you've got Brennan, freakishly talented but....
