5th Test at The Oval, London

Looks like Warner will be playing given Langers qoute:

"Davey hasn't had a great series but imagine how good the team will be when he starts having a great series and we're hopeful he'll do that in the next Test match."

3 ducks in a row, Mark Waugh holds the batsmen record with 4...can he beat him lol
Well if that's the case then fine I suppose. He's goodish odds of bagging another pair I fear. Anyway I hope he does well. Given that quote the only change I'd like to see is Usman for Harris. I wonder if that will happen though? If Steve Waugh is influencing team composition then Usman might be benched again.

Even if he has a couple more failures, if he gets runs at the start of the Oz domestic season I suspect they'll stick with Warner.

Of course Mark Waugh didn't lose his place after the 4 ducks in a row in SL because he found form at the start of the next Oz domestic summer.

This is one of those games where a draw achieves as much as a win. So australia should try to hang around for Smith to make 400.

I've been thinking about this, I can't see any advantage to blooding a young batsman such as Sibley at The Oval. Whilst Sibley and Pope are likely to be better long term prospects than Denly and Roy in the test set up it's almost setting them up to fail in a one off situation against Cummins, Hazelwood et al. Tour of New Zealand should be the time for significant changes.

Still can't see anyone making a case for batting at 3 immediately.

So the general consensus has been that England's batting has been very bad, and that Australia's bowling has been extremely good, but it doesn't seem as though a lot of thought is going into how related the 2 are.

Maybe England haven't been that bad but made to look it because Australia have bowled well, or vice versa.
Just noticed this.

Kind of worth noting that England did lose a Test series to WI quite recently by (amongst other things) getting shot out for pitiful scores, as well as getting bowled out for <100 vs Ireland and NZ. The Australian bowling has been relentless, as good as I've seen from an Aus attack in England in my lifetime, but there's a fair body of work to suggest that this England batting lineup is not Test standard. At least not top-four-nation Test standard.

A lot of the low scores were rather lame surrenders. But since the 67 they’ve batted with great grit and determination. But at Old Trafford they still barely reached Australia’s first innings total after 2 days and 20 wickets. As is often the case in these situations it’s a bit of both. High quality bowling and substandard batting.

And there we go, shows some of us on CW have some common sense ;)

Foxsports: "Justin Langer has hinted Pat Cummins may be rested for the final Ashes Test at The Oval following his marathon four-months of cricket in England."

I'd be pretty livid if I were Cummins and was rested from a live rubber. He's only the best bowler in the world.

Unless he's injured or is near injury he should play.

With Pattinson and Starc fresh and Hazlewood still available, why would you risk running Cummins into the ground?

The real question is how bad is Lyon's finger and will this significantly reduce his bowling load therefore asking even more effort from the pace trio.

I see Pope made 68 yesterday in a game where 17 wkts have fallen for only 292 runs in the 2 days. Also Sibley hit 51.

But good on you England for playing the same squad in this test*;)

Because, without Cummins, our much vaunted pace attack is gettable. Lyon's sore pinky is a big problem as we rely on him to bowl bulk overs. At least OT shows we can still win without him taking a lot of wickets. So I'm hoping we'll pick both Lyon and Cummins despite their issues. They are our two most important bowlers. Play Marsh. He and Marnus can bowl overs to mediate the workloads.

Definitely. Last Ashes he played in all 5 Tests bowling 197.1 overs. So far 164.1. Love watching him bowl. Bat first and let him have an extra day's rest.

Longer series though and unlike the last Ashes he doesn't have a 5th bowler either.

It depends on what his issues are, though. If it's general fatigue, then see how he comes up by tomorrow morning and if he's right within himself (he most likely will be) then play him. But if they've done tests and he's getting into that danger area for stress fractures, then he absolutely shouldn't play. An injury like that would rule him out for basically the whole of the home summer. And while I know that's only Pakistan and NZ, you still want him fit for those games rather than out because he played in this one.

They have to play Cummins because he is the front line bowler or this attack. Imagine if Australia rested McGrath. Rest him by batting long and letting Smith get a big one - or grinding Hazelwood into the ground. He has a big break after this game. Except being on the verge of injury, he should play.
