GIMH

Norwood's on Fire
So I've only watched the last half hour or so and a small part of the morning session

I know flibberty doesn't agree but Buttler definitely coming out of a slump here
He is but he was in a slump when it mattered and he has got 1 ton in his 36th test and is playing as a batsman. If that is good enough then keep picking him.

Rubbish isn't it? They were actually ok this morning IIRC they managed 28 overs, but since then they've been terrible.

Buttler has a fear of failure. Check the comments he made after the world cup final. If England lost he may have retired. When the tail comes in he plays as if he has nothing to lose and everything to gain. The question is how can you make him bat in that mindset from ball one batting him up the order? The only position I can think of is number 1, with the whole team behind him. Let him play his natural game there and see what happens. The safe bet is 6 or 7, but he's come off a few times in 30 odd tests in the role. It is clear that he likes batting with Leach, he knows him well personally. Buttler bats so well chasing in limited overs due to seeing the finishing line and fear of losing. Interesting player because he is so talented despite all of this. I for one would be very reluctant to bat him number 1, he's not proven in the top 5 let alone opening in red ball stuff.

I called for Marsh to be included last Test so looking forward to all the haters tasting it when he produces a total of 100 runs and 5 wkts over the match ;)
How are the Aussie breakfasts tasting this morning? Mine is tasting pretty good after Marsh has taken half the English wickets to fall ;)

Surely England have to cut some of the dead wood adrift ahead of the tour to us. A Kiwi poster suggested the series doesn't count for Test championship points? Seems like the ideal time to ship Bairstow off at the very least.

That's a bit of a paradox, him having a fear of failure but doing so well in limited overs motivated by a fear of losing.

For all the good of Marsh getting those wickets, England have nearly 300 runs in the board. That means Australia need to roll the tall and post a minimum of 450 to have a shot at a win/ draw.

Really the terrible thing for me is how Australia let England bat at 3.5 rpo all day. That has screwed us more than anything. Siddle the main culprit - being as loose as Starc without the wicket taking threat.

A day of missed opportunities for Australia. Cummins could have a Michelle the way he's bowling but had a number of chances put down. Playing Siddle over Starc. Bowling instead of batting. Wasted opportunities.

Marsh so emotional in his post game interview

Quite touching, almost makes you regret the years of abuse

We’re 290/8 batting first on the flattest pitch in England and you talk of wasted opportunities

Unless by some miracle we get Smith cheaply you’ll put us under huge pressure in the 3rd innings. Based on some of the dismissals today we don’t look up for the fight.

People will savage someone thoroughly decent for not being able to produce performances on a field, but will forgive someone like Wayne Carey, Greg Bird etc who physically assaulted women as long as they win games for their side. Welcome to human nature.

Problem with Buttler is just how little he contributes in a slump. Watching from afar he seems to be particularly effected by confidence or a lack of it.

When you actually look at his performances this series in the context of the match he’s not done too badly. Would certainly ditch Bairstow, who looks like he’s completely lost the appetite as well as the technique for batting long, before Buttler.

Yesh, fitting that public sentiment is shifting overnight because of those same performances on the field
