If the English county setup allows overseas (notably Australian) players in their teams, it seems logical that there should be a reciprocal arrangement. At the moment, players like Labuschagne gain invaluable experience playing at a high level in English conditions while English experience in Australian conditions is currently limited to the hit and giggle of Big Bash.

Why? It's not logical at all. They chose their own arrangements, why should anyone else reciprocate?

And I'll say again, that despite how often people talk about how overseas players improve the standard of County Cricket, English cricket has never been stronger than it was prior to their introduction.

uh no

There are only 6 Shield teams. Can't afford to kock out 6+ local players from the first class system for no good reason. English county is 18 teams, you need overseas players to keep the quality up.

Now if they were to add in a few extra teams to the competition then maybe it wouldn't be a completely ridiculous suggestion

I mean, each shield team probably has at least two players who we can pretty clearly afford to kick to the curb. may I remind you of Nick Larkin? I wouldn't really have a problem with each shield team using an overseas player but CA's first step should be to give the ACT a shield team. adding only one team in over 60 years is clearly absurd. and if a complaint is 'quality', then obviously you can encourage the use of overseas players to cover that gap

The counties don't attract overseas players because out of some public-spirited attitude towards player development and exposure for the betterment of English cricket. They do it because they want to win more county games, and it very much seems like many of them couldn't care less what it means for English cricket or the national team more broadly. The state associations here have no incentive or obligations to reciprocate.

When was the last time an England-based player played a full season of Sheffield Shield? Any since Graeme Hick in 90/91?

Not that outrageous a call really. If Oz had held their catches could've bowled England out for around 100.

Biggest impediment to ending today is Smith batting throughout; seems perfectly suited for an overdue huge innings.

I had a good text exchange with Travis Head this morning who is due to be my captain in the summer at Sussex.
He said Australia had all of the bowlers padded up last night ready to sacrifice them in the final session.
lmao

This pitch is still doing plenty, how about just trying to get Smith out a regular way? Like they did in the first innings? Don't rate jumping straight to the leg-side short-ball plan so quickly.

Not to mention it actually significantly helps English cricket by keeping the County Championship as strong as it can be, with better competition and standards for their local players. Without overseas players the jump from County to Test match is even bigger and you're not doing your young players any favours.
