5th Test at Hobart - 14-19 Jan 2022

surely your not implying it's all about that.
what about those that work at night or go to bed early? they're totally getting screwed.
Surely, that WOULD be a big part. Night workers or early beders would be a minority.

I wonder if the Indian market has any part of it too.

Is this a joke? It's always been about that and that has never been a secret
fair argument Jed.
these 2 points were just another side of the coin for those that miss out.
but what it's really about is how it changes the game itself, and the quality of test cricket that we get.
in 17 tests there have been no draws, not that draws are are great to have, but it just shows that the ball dominates too much.
look at all the results so far, there's hardly been a good game of cricket yet.

how many overs did we end up getting today? Forecast doesn’t look overly good for tomorrow either tbh

Only going off the highlights I saw and not full days play but green honestly looked better then head. Those 2 back foot shots to mark wood in the 60's where pure porn.

I know this may be a bit harsh, and it's England so it won't matter, but the latter 3 dismissals today really felt like the 4th test vs India last summer with players leaving runs out there. All of green, marnus and head got themselves out, needed one of them to make 150+.

I think we just have to accept now that Head will never actually look great and just judge him on his actual output.

But yeah Green will be properly annoyed that he isn't still not out. Looked so solid.

Did Smith get a good one? Looked like a straight back of a length delivery that he's squared up on. Need to watch that a few times to get a clearer indication

this has been an extended run of being out of form for smith, right? i mean he isn't even scoring at home and that too against his favorite punching bag now...

Know where in a good position now because of the marnus drop from crawley, but as an aussie fan almost wish he'de taken it. Green and head both did fantastic today to get us to a good score after 3-12 and 4-80, but would have really enjoyed if green and head had come together at 4-12 and had to fightback against a pumped up england attack. Carey getting a chance to come in earlier would have been nice aswell, but maybe some 5-250 "Downhill" runs are what he needs to get some confidence at this level. Will be interesting to see how he handles batting with the tail.

Nup, nothing special at all about it. Just one of those ones you feel at early with hard hands and he pretty well guided it to 2nd. Length should've been comfortable but he followed it. Might've had it in his head that it was a dirty green seaming deck

that's a wee bit harsh Spark, of course changes can be good, pending on what they are and how they fare of course.
nobody is suggesting write the concept off completely, all I suggested was that twice in a series is far too often.
until recently test cricket has always been during the day and it's simply a matter of opinion whether that change is a good one.
I personally don't like the concept at all, many others won't either, but anti cricket and should be ignored?
come on you're losing the plot here.
I say play them in most Tests, apart from your traditionals - Boxing Day, New Year's Test etc.

It might be a matter of opinion but Test cricket's viability relies on getting away from the sort of 'don't change how it's always been' mentality. People are less and less inclined to watch Test cricket during the day, at the ground and certainly on TV (where the money is made through broadcast dollars). I know I'm that way - I drift in and out during the day, I'll look on cricinfo regularly and get to a device when I can, but I have kids/a job/I'm on holiday now etc. But day/night Tests, I'm all in for the evening. I love the Australia D/N Test time slot, and I enjoy ours too.

I think I was arguing this years ago in CW before day night tests were approved, but it’s just the way of the future. Unless everyone is on holidays, how are you supposed to play your marquee events during the middle of the day?

You’re right but they probably feel a bit complacent with the shocking England line up. Having said that, this is the perfect time for the coach or captain to give them a spray and remind them that more ruthlessness is needed.

I agree. ODIs went that way, and no one had a problem with it. In fact it added to the product. The ball works, by and large, which was always the biggest potential issue to D/N Tests.

I suppose it's a country-by-country consideration as to whether D/N Tests should be the norm. For example, in NZ, our Test cricket is very sparse in viewership both at the ground and on TV as a daytime product. We don't have a massive viewing public compared to most other countries in the world. D/N Tests, to me, are our best option unless we're talking Boxing Day/NYs Tests.

That might be different in somewhere like Australia where Melbourne/greater VIC has 4-5 million people, their country-wide viewership is much higher, or in India (not sure here) where again they have a much bigger pool of people to watch and attend, and certainly a more passionate viewership who will look to watch at all costs. England are also different in terms of their cricket culture of attending Test matches in numbers.

i mean fair enough he's probably right. but then probably keep that **** in house about the one bloke in the past three years who has debuted and genuinely looked like he is cut out for this level.

fella taking poles at 21 ffs. should be more like chris woakes. clean cut, good looking, stand up pro, absolute dog **** with the ball.

As someone who is partially colourblind, the pink ball is much harder to pick up on the TV than either the white or red balls. I actually wish they'd gone with either orange or yellow than pink.

Also, these days actually watching the tests during the day is easier for me and my schedule so from a purely selfish perspective I prefer the day tests, but I'm not opposed to around 1/3 of the tests being day nighters. But the Sydney/ Melbourne tests should continue to be day tests, and from a time perspective, so should the WA test.

Colourblind shift workers aren't exactly a large demographic to consider tbf.
