4th Test at Old Trafford, Manchester

Is there any merit in bowling full and at the stumps any more?
I like to think so, but a lot of teams' brains' trusts apparently beg to differ.

Edit: not if you're referring specifically to Smith. Just hammer away on a length outside off and don't feed his leg side shots.

To add to that previous post, just not sure how we’re actually getting Smith out, seems like we’re content to sit in and keep our fingers crossed he makes a mistake.

Doesn’t at this stage seem a plan we’re confident enough in to persist with for any great length of time.
Agreed

They’re over complicating things & don’t seem to stick to a plan

cummins, lyon and pattinson all didn't have 5fers in first cricket when picked iirc (pattinson had one in List A), and haze should have debuted before he had one too

Presumably it would come as something of a surprise to the batsman and they may not know how to deal with it, maybe expecting a Yorker, they will get out. It's worth a try I think.

You’re all talking about who made these great prognostications when I was the only bloke who said Australia would get a big first Innings lead last week and gave multi-paragraph reasons for it, all of which were bang on.

And here you all are saying “I thought X was less shot than everyone else thought.” Whoop Dee doo
You also said Australia would win 5-0 tbf

Just stick to around off stump on a good length

It works with 99% of batsmen
This is true. But the lack of imagination by the bowling attack could maybe benefit from a traditional approach. If by this you mean Mr Smith being the other 1%

Smith must be loving how every English quick now thinks 80mph bouncers will clock him. Cute.

dropped catch!

I know they're never easy but that really should have been caught

Smith looks off this morning

That shot was pure genius.

Edit: heh, dropped and almost plays on to follow

It's funny to think that folk believe that a bit of left arm spin will beat Steve, he'll fill his boots surely.
