3rd Test at Melbourne - December 26 - 30

Need 6 quick wickets with a deficit of just 22 and of course we are bowling a finger spinner with defensive fields to two left handers on Day 2 of the test match. This is absolute idiocy, the sort of decision that when combined with the rest of the decisions made over the past year should see both Root and Silverwood get sacked at the end of this tour.
Absolutely bang on

i wouldn't even class it as a chance as I suspect if he did gather, Harris would have had time to get back, but he wasn't in the same postcode
Yeah I was thinking this too. Obviously not great for his confidence but very few keepers are converting that into a dismissal IMO.

Whatever it takes!!!
Made it look tougher because his feet were stuck in concrete. Probably still not a guarantee he'd have caught it if he had tbf but it wasnt as difficult as it seemed.
Yeah, if you look at his set up as a keeper, he stands wider of off stump than you would want to, as a keeper, esp. for the spinner turning the bal into the left hander. He then takes a step inside towards thes stumps and then is just rooted there. His feet simply do not move with the ball and he hardly reacts to the ball at all, in his positioning either horizontally or vertically. The best keepers both move up and across with the ball as it pitches and moves. Good keepers get at least one part of it right. He has got both of it wrong as far as I am concerned.

It is a bit like Rishabh Pant who has this compulsive step to his left as a keeper for whatever reason and therefore ends up adjusting his actual starting position as a keeper to make up for it. He tends to overcome it sometimes coz he has superb reflexes and being younger, is more athletic and can throw himself around. And even he has gotten more and more stationary in his stance and later with his movements, especially when keeping to spin.

the argument in favour of the tactic was warming jack leach into his spell and the tour
Playing the long game by bowling negatively while he found his confidence
Who said that? Playing the long game at 0-2 with their lead about to be wiped out 4 down!

Hameed's positioning at short leg indicates England's muddled thinking too. He is not really close enough to catch a defensive bat pad but he is standing almost as if he wants to stop a regular tuck around single.

Root said after Brisbane that Leach getting annihilated was his fault because he gave him fields that were too attacking to begin with. I thought it was Root just protecting his player, but he actually seems to believe it...

Wtf isn’t Foakes keeping?

If fit, he’s arguably the world’s best plus he can bat
I assume they are concerned his batting is not test match quality.

And yeah I know imagine not been good enough to get into this top 7.

Looking at his record on cricinfo, had a really good series in Sri Lanka, poor series in West Indies in 2019 and then recalled and did poorly in India this year. Not ideal, but plenty of top batters have flopped first time round in India over the last few decades.
