Few modern captains care to persist with five fielders around the bat for a spinner if he takes some stick, regardless of the total they're defending. Making your space as a batsman less crowded by bopping a few can only improve your chances of survival imo.
Yeah I think they moved someone out to deep mid-wicket immediately after that shot

if it's part of a clearly defined plan to force a bowler to deviate from his preferred lines and lengths then sure. khawaja did that to great effect by reverse sweeping yasir during an otherwise very defensive innings. but that's a far cry from just having a slog because the spaces are out there.

Probably jinxing him by saying so, but Woakes has pretty consistently looked superior to a few of the specialist batsmen so far this series.

"Bat naturally" is the "just be yourself" of batting advice. Avoid.
it should be put in the basket of long disproven chappellisms like "it's always safer to use your feet and hit the bowler over their head than reverse sweep"

Just saw Pope still averages above 50 in FC despite a very medicore test career taking up a third of that. Must average 60+ in county. Absolutely the kind of player England probably expected to come in and do well, pretty sad the state of things. His test average is now sub 30

he fixed that in the gabba chase. went for it only in the last hour.
yeah from what i recall he just came out slogging at everything after the break and i thought "this will last about five overs" and sure enough

These two showing a draw was not out of the question if Pope and Stokes had stuck around for a while. Bowling hasn't looked very threatening since Stokes fell.

Pretty good effort from these two to survive. Though I don't think Australia's approach to Woakes in particular has felt right, they probably should've bowled Green at some point.

Suspect the second new ball will change things but if these two are still here by 7pm AEST, there's something to watch.

Team I'd pick for 3rd test:

Crawley
Burns
Malan
Root
Stokes
Lawrence
Bairstow (wk)
Woakes
Wood
Mahmood
Leach

Might as well try something while the series is still alive.

Malan
Root
Lawrence/Hameed/Burns/Crawley/Kitchen Sink
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Robinson

This might actually work
