2nd semi-final: India vs England | Providence

Kenneth Viljoen

International Regular
I just want to make one thing clear to all the ignorant people out there.

Both the semi finals had EQUAL amount of extra time in case of rain. It's 250 minutes. It's the SAME for both matches.

Since 1st semi was a night game starting late at 8:30pm, only upto 60 minutes of extra time could be added on the night of the game. And the remaining 190 minutes were reserved for the next day from 2 pm till 5:10 pm. Total 250 minutes (60 mins + 190 mins).

Second semi final because it starts early at 10:30 am, all 250 minutes of extra time could be applied later on the same day, so there was no need to have a "reserve day."

Technically first semi final didn't really have a reserve day either, it was just a "190 minute window" the next day as they couldn't fit much of the 250 minutes of extra time on the night of the match.

Essentially People / ex-cricketers particularly English / media are spreading BS online without knowing the actual facts.
A reserve day should be a separate day to cater for the possibility that match day has a complete washout.

Throw in the fact that half the matches are being played at a time that suits the Indian TV audience (and certainly not the hosts or local spectators) and the fact India had a pre-arranged semi final on a spin friendly track.
Agreed in the main but let's not kid ourselves locals would've flocked to these games if held at more sensible times. The turnouts have been very disappointing

Agreed, far more chance of a change in weather 24 hours later.
But it was still just a 3 hour window on the next day. Not a proper reserve day. 2 pm till 5:10 pm.

And how is that afternoon time slot fair either?? when the original match was a 'night' match starting 8:30pm.

So a night match 'continues' in the afternoon time of the next day... from whatever position the match stopped at the previous night. So eg if 16 overs had been bowled the previous night, you continue the next day from there... in the afternoon! What the hell is that

The big mistake ICC made was to not have the final on Sunday; it would have allowed an extra day to be scheduled. Plus the winner of the 2nd semi final needed that extra day to travel, recover and prepare. Now, however, there is little time. Match might finish late on Thursday and next morning winning team has to fly to Barbados and give themselves the remaining part of Friday to recover, so that they are ready by 10 am the following day (Saturday) for the final. There's really no time to prepare or practice or even recuperate completely.

Seems odd to me too, aren't all Finals normally on a Sunday?

Mind you, were England to make it, it would've clashed with the football team playing in the Euros.

The whole tournament is a logistical farce that seems to have been organised by the office intern.

Slightly bizarre stat heading into this game:

Both Rohit and Buttler have faced 120 balls in 6 innings and scored 191 runs.

Sounds like a delayed toss but not by much as rain has stopped.....

Whats so special about guyana that they had to schedule india here? It looks like its not even that much spin friendly, not many indian fans out there too
This match was played at my home ground. Phagwah day, India got more support than West Indies from the locals.

Don't think it will be a tough decision at the toss, surely bowl first in this is a big advantage.

The big mistake the ICC made was having a WC in this part of the world at this time of year.

As ever, money talks, and as we know it's all about trying to grow the game in the USA.

The whole tournament has been a bit of a shambles.

Having no reserve day for a SF is laughable.

And the decision to award the game to the group winners in the event of a wash out makes the 2019 50 over final decision on boundary count, look like a work of genius.

Someone wrote this on cricbuzz! I think it’s an outstanding point actually

It’s a good thing there’s no reserve day then. If there was a reserve day, the first priority would have been to finish the game on the same day and hence have a shortened game. Now that there’s no reserve day, the game can be extended for about 4 hours before we start having a shortened game.
