this is why you have to attack the backup bowlers. getting through 10 overs of starc and cummins in the last 20 is just not happening

Game is over, Aus will win by 50ish.

Lost by the batting against Maxwell.
I can understand this, but getting Mendis started would have proven very profitable had Dimuth hung around, losing Matthews early was a huge blow too

Also I wouldn't make a call until Thisara is gone too, he's capable of unreal heists

Thirimane was an embarrasment against Maxwell. Just blocked him, literally didn't play an aggressive shot. Dimuth also.

I didn't see that innings tbh, he's hopeless against offspin. I think Dimuth's problem was that he simply decided that he wasn't going to score in front of square, led to the field placement that put the clamps on and then had him caught

Mendis is much the same, hence the go slow, preventing a collapse was the number one priority but it's really time for someone to go now
Mendis is still a baby everyone forgets. He's allowed to be hot and cold at this stage of career. Hadn't even made his ODI debut when the last WC took place

yeah as good as that innings was, the majority of his early runs were scored with the pull and the flick off the legs/hips. once aus wizened up and bowled the right line and a bit fuller, then he really struggled for fluency

Tbf DDS while in poor form is definitely a better bat than who they just sent out at 6 and 7
Not really a power hitter though, would back him to get us home from a reasonable position if the run rate was about 8, but not from a tough position with the rate pushing 10

I think it's more a matter of SL failing to execute their strategy rather than having the wrong approach though, they got the good start, and decided to camp out and take the game deep, Dimuth and Thirimanne just don't have the rounded game to coast along in modern ODIs imo (plus they haven't been playing in the national ODI team much since the last WC). If one of them or even Matthews was able to hang around we'd still be in position to use our tail for their intended role (slogging the last few runs). Note that none of Thirimanne, Dimuth or Matthews were dismissed playing get out shots, they weren't under duress, they just failed to execute the strategy of taking the game deep and left the middle-lower order exposed against bowlers they aren't really good enough to score against for a decent period.

If anyone likes poetic justice, Dickwella scored a 93-ball 111 today for SL A to win them a game.
