2024–25 NZ domestic season

I really liked how after Solia cut one straight to point Allen threw his head back and despairingly looked down on Solia (who's been captain the rest of the season), right after almost getting out with a wild slash over the off-side twice in his first four balls.

I have two questions:
  • who had the bright idea of making Finn Allen captain?
  • are Wellington giving up on letting Blundell keep wicket because he's been that trash?
Could prove to be an inspired move to bring out the best in Allen - coming back to Ford Trophy is a bit of a come down after playing in the BBL.

Good looking 3-fer for Shipley today while foulkes and Jamieson got boshed. Wonderful Yorker to get one and some extra bounce from a length to get a second. Looks like he's bowling really well at first change with that older ball.

Keeper round up brought to you by Roundup, the herbicide trusted by those in agribusiness to bosh a weed

Seifert (3) - 109* (Cricinfo says he kept but as pointed out this might be false news, as Pomare also played. The nzc scorecards won't load for me for some reason but let's include them both)
Pomare (7) - 7*
Hay (4) - 51
Cleaver (1) - 3
Chu (6) - 2
Fletcher (5) - 31*
McLachlan - dnb

Hay back with a score, Chu with a rare miss this season, seifert with his second century of the tournament and Cleaver continues to walk struggle street.

Surely that is a typo for Finn captaining? With Solia in the team? Finn has an IQ of 9, and the regular captain is in the side. I can't see how that's true.

Maybe it's the ol' "If we give him some responsibility, maybe he'll actually start taking this **** seriously" gambit.

I can't think of anyone who deserves captaincy less. Surely it has to be earned? It's another example of being given something that isn't earned.

Sorta along the lines of the Hurricanes appointing 4 captains. All a bit of a nonsense

Tashkoff seems to have hit some form in a pretty random role as opener. I can't help but think that the Wellington selection at the moment is either by drawing of cards or a blindfolded knife-thrower chucking at a spinning disc covered in the faces of the available options.

He's impressed with the white ball all domestic season since back from injury, though tbf that yorker was a foot down leg and O'Donnell kicked it onto his stumps. I don't know what our schedule looks like (aside from Champions Trophy and no tests until July) though I'd like to see Shipley get a run for NZ again some time soon.

You wouldn't expect to see a batting lineup as good as CD's get smashed by Otago like that. 4/18 and then a tortuous slow recovery to 162 via 7/79. Hazeldine, McKay and Foxcroft not necessarily known for keeping the runs down (though the former two do take wickets) and all went at 4s or below.

Otago have been a lot better this season, wonder how much is down to Ashley Noffke's involvement.

That one was an interesting innings to watch. Definitely demonstrated a downside of the pervasive "hit your way out of trouble" approach. Schmulian was a little strike-deprived too, which wasn't great.

I would have picked shipley for the CT over jamieson. Did well when NZ toured Pak before the last WC and I think he's a better lower order bat and middle overs bowler than Jamieson atm.

Maybe the plan is for Henry and Jamieson to operate in the PP and o'rourke to operate more in the middle/death?

I'm not at all sold on bringing Jamieson in for the CT. The guy is making his way back from a huge injury. Let him recover and give him the best shot at nailing it in tests and then once he's back on deck for a while, he can commit more to pajama cricket and earn some coin in India.

It would be interesting to know what the medical team think about it. In purely cricketing terms he looked great in the Super Smash so even a limited role bowling 5 or 6 overs given there are several spin options would be handy.

I do back Jamieson to become a fairly good white-ball bowler if he stays fit for a few years. Though he isn't at present (or at least, last time he played white ball cricket for NZ he wasnt'). In the super smash his skills were so obviously next level, though at the same time he tried to bowl every variation under the sun - hooping inswing, offcutters, leg-cutters, bouncer, outswinger, back of the hand slower bouncer - which I don't think actually gets the best outcome and certainly not when you go back to international cricket. Though I also agree with everyone that he should be a test-cricket-first bowler, providing his fitness holds up.

Shipley was good too, though I can see why they preferred Jamieson here.
