2024–25 NZ domestic season

Made it a goal to go to every basin game I possibly can this year. Fun game to watch live but wouldn't mind seeing Wellington win something, think that's 5 losses on the trot which I've been to.

The pitch was a fresh strip way over to the east of the block with a gentle westerly which Auckland exploited ruthlessly. They also got a hefty dose of luck, with 2 or 3 skied balls landing between fielders and a few sixes which barely cleared the fielder on the rope. Based on how the rest of the innings played out, I reckon you play out this innings 100 times 95 of them Auckland only get 180. Not sure if it's always been this way but this is the first year I've paid close attention to the scoring patterns in the smash and almost everyone has been doing crap in the last 10 overs, even after flying starts. Not sure if it's the pitches or a bit of a dearth of hitting talent.

I know domestic batting lineups are always going to be heavily dependent on 1-2 guns, but the birbs are sorely lacking in guys in the middle-lower order who don't average a ton but can whack 20 off 10 once in every few games. It's a biggie from Robinson or Bracewell or bust. Abbas is probably a couple of years away from consistency as the talent is clearly there but the decision making is still questionable, he almost got out taking on the long side of the ground twice today.

Under 17 tournament on. Guessing that Jamie Ingram is son of Peter.

If anyone hasn't seen BJ Jacobs' six from today, do yourself a favour. Back foot punch over long off for six off Snedden - the perfect mesh of MCC coaching manual and modern-day power.

And in other news, Angus Olliver looks like the love child of the Tiger King and Heath Davis (which is not an inconceivable union).
Just saw that. That's unbelievable. Finn Allen played a similar back foot punch for six off Overton in the BBL the other day, although his was more square of the wicket. Jacobs's one was maybe even more impressive.

Where are the highlights? Nzc website and app are lacking the usual ability to see a batsman boundaries (and bowlers wickets)

Last year it was noted on here reasonably often that Abbas is simply too orthodox with zero power in T20. I suspect he'll be fine in red ball.

And the Jock McKenzie catch is also worth watching. Particularly liked the casual one-handed re-gather.

But, I reckon there is a 50/50 chance that both of these instances will be ommitted by the algorithm that creates the NZC youTube highlights package for this match.
We need to talk more about this...has it actually been confirmed that the highlights packages are driven by algorithms? It gives me the absolute shits.

Amazingly, the NZC packages aren't a jot on the disgrace that is the PGA Tour YouTube channel. That organisation has more money than nearly anyone, and their 15 minute round highlight clips are the most insanely poorly constructed videos you'll ever see. They're not in time sequence, they focus too much on irrelevant players, skip important moments, it's awful.

I just don't know why organisations do this. Ok, I do (money) but I consume a lot of my sport in highlight form, as I'm sure a lot of people do.

YouTube. But they're terrible.
Or TVNZ+ which are good (although I don't know if they do packages for the SS? Or if it is full replay only).

Any games actually televised don't end up with the interactive scorecards on the nzc website.

I have heard through the grapevine that cricket highlights are deceptively difficult because your average sports video editor doesn't have intimate cricketing knowledge beyond six=good wicket=bad, and those who do are paid a lot more money to do more interesting things.

It was suggested on commentary that Craig McMillan and Paul Wiseman (NZ Cricket National Talent ID Manager) were at the Basin yesterday assessing the players. In which case Simon Keene and Abbas picked a good day to tee off.

I have heard through the grapevine that when the US Marines invaded the Panama Canal Zone in 1989 that they surrounded Manual Noriega's Presidential Palace compound. and set up giant screens and played NZC youtube highlights non-stop on a loop 24 hours a day.

Until he was finally driven out a dribbling wreck muttering something about "You showed only one ball of him, he was on 23, next thing there were 2 new batters, but I know for a fact he scored 138. What the **** happened between 23, him getting a century, getting out, and two new batsman being in ?!?! ... , You ****ing crazy gringos !!!! Damn you!, Damn you all to hellll !!!! "

"and, WORST OF ALLL !!!! you loco gringo, you even made the title of the video "Player X dominates with perfect 138". Estupido !!!! How do you sleep ?!

Given what President Trump is saying now vis a vis the Panama Canal, the locals might be in for another dose of NZC Youtube highlights, although perhaps the mere threat of such a vicious onslaught of psychological warfare may see the Panamanians agree to hand over the Canal Zone without a fight.

Makes sense, some people say that the nzc video editors are actually located in a secret building somewhere in Guantanamo Bay.

I believe it, because I've never met one.

Yep TVNZ do 10-15 minute highlights packages for each game.

I guess Abbas is already on their radar with NZ A selection. I don't think he bowled in Super Smash last season so they're probably interested to see how that goes too. Keene had a pretty tidy bowling performance. I would be interested to know what pace Olliver is bowling. He was causing the CD players problems with his short deliveries the other day.

In a Waddle/Coney podcast a month or so ago.
A section of that was an interview with Wellington coach Shane Jurgensen.
In which he he mentioned the work they were doing with Abbas on his bowling, that they were wanting to get more out of his bowling in T20s. I can't remember specifics , except were talking about working on strength. maybe conditioning.

Anyway, bowling for Abbas was very much on the radar. I think there were comments on here this season wondering if he was giving it up as a serious part of his cricket.

Check out On The Front Foot podcast if you want a source more precise than my garbled memory.

It's been a year mate, must be time for the update of the SteveNZ XI line up. Might also be good to see the SteveNZ Duds XI so we know who's going to have an immediate run of form.
I think along the way, I haven't fully grasped the criteria for the XI. One thing I know is anyone who plays for Howick Pak goes straight in, so from the domestic scene you have the Phillips boys, Danru Ferns, Lachie Stackpole, Colin Manu. Then you have the lookers who can play, which is Jamieson, Will Young, Sean Solia and new entrant Dean Foxcroft who looked dishy at Alexandra. I swapped Max Chu for Mitch Hay, which is disappointing given Hay is a good looking dude but just didn't get a good sense of watching him live. Henry Shipley is in, because he's a beast, Rhys Mariu because I love old school openers (Heaphy goes close, too), and Matt Fisher/Brett Randall I enjoy watching bowl as well. No frontline spinners in my side. And we don't play T20s.

As for duds, the guys I don't rate but often perform are ones like Katene Clarke, Tim Robinson (another shoveller but could get better), Dane Cleaver, Will O'Donnell, Cole McConchie (seems like a great bloke, though), Cam Fletcher, Logan van Beek, Michael Snedden and Finn Allen, who went from the red-hot XI to the Duds in record time.

Thanks hadn't heard of this. Have found the episode and checked the transcript. Jurgensen discusses Abbas at 19.10. Also comments from Jacobs from 9.09. Before he discusses Abbas he
suggests Nick Kelly could make the step up in all formats.

Does anyone listen to 'On the Front Foot'? I can't stand it personally and have listened to a few, but not for some time.
I'm not subscribed to it. But I check it out during the test series etc as Coney is worth listening to.

It is an international cricket focussed podcast, seems to me. And there's a lot of competition for that space. I guess it's actually a (highly produced) domestic radio show really, rather than a podcast?

Coney does full time radio and commentary now in UK so he is is very up to the play, with all international cricket/ So, I find his opinions interesting. Sadly for Waddle, he is now way off the pace now that he isn't freezing his butt off every day up in the rafters of the RA Vance stand. Down to a standard of not knowing how to pronounce Mariu, etc.

But, you're not going to find an interview with a provincial coach discussing the bowling of a 5th change domestic seamer anywhere else ....

Waddle is still bitter about Radio Sport and losing comm rights etc and takes every opportunity he can to make a jibe at NZC. It seems a podcast that would suit those in their 60's plus IMO.
