2024–25 Australian Domestic Season

What's he doing playing for the 2nd team?
2nd XI comp allows 12 players with 11 actual bat/bowl. So Maxwell can bat and bowl when he wants and just rest in the dressing room at other times. Well that's my guess anyway lol

He could have just played the next Shield game starting Sunday but this gives him an extra game before he joins the whiteball squad vs Pakistan (he wants to prove his red ball worth for SriLanka tour)

why isn't jake edwards in the australia a team
Checking to see how good a record Jack Edwards had and was shocked to see Mickey Edwards has retired from all cricket at only 29. I thought he would have milked the county circuit for a few more years

It seems there is already an announced plan for the A Games

Game 1 in Mackay will include Connolly, Murphy, Steketee, Buckingham, O'Neill

Game 2 in Melbourne will include Rocchiccioli, Boland, Neser, McAndrew

Suggestion is that Peirson and Philippe will also split Games

By elimination that leaves these 6 whereby one misses out for Connolly in the first game (has to be Davies or Webster which is madness, who does Connolly have pics of)

Bancroft
Harris
Konstas
McSweeney
Davies
Webster

Yes, Bailey said Konstas will likely bat 3 if he doesn't open so McSweeney drops down a spot

Don't quite understand Connolly being picked gets greeted with a "who does he have pics of" comment when Sam Konstas being there seems to be being celebrated? Seems to me their selections here are pretty similar, young players who have played good innings in their very brief first class careers respectively to date.

If anything Konstas getting selected is even more egregious as it genuinely seems like from the outside looking in that he is genuinely being considered for the Test team if he goes well here, which is just flat out insane imo

Personally I probably wouldn't have had either of them in this squad myself. While I can see the argument for getting experience around a higher level, this does feel just a bit too much like Greg Chappell logic for my liking

Sure a lot of Aussies will disagree with me, but I genuinely think the selectors are looking at the calls England have made over the last two years and trying to do similar things. They are picking on assets and potential rather than performance.

Fraser-McGurk, Connolly and Konstas are all Bazball-style picks. You can even make the argument Smith opening was as well.

As much as I loathe to say anything vaugely positive about English cricket, honestly none of their Test batting selections of the recent era even come close to how absurd Konstas playing Tests so soon if it happens would be. The real bizarre picks from them have been a couple of the spinners (which I guess you could call a qualified success) and then Josh Hull (who most certainly wasn't), all of the specialist bats picked have had a bit of success or at least experience at County level

When it comes to batting especially, there is no substitute for actually having played an at least reasonable amount of FC cricket first

Konstas is not in real consideration for the Test side IMO. But there is definitely something going on with the likes of Connolly getting named in squads of all formats when prior to this summer he wasn't even a first choice WA player. Not to mention Beardman being in a national squad and was a legitimate chance of playing a game with 1 more injury, which would have been absurd

Don't think it's necessarily a bad thing but I would lean a bit more on the side of merit over potential were it up to me

Don’t see an issue with those guys playing in A games as long as it’s not a ‘selection match’
Yeah, fair call.

Ovbiously the cricketing media in this country will try and push that narrative regardless, but if Bailey and co on the selection panel don't see it that way then yeah there is no problem

To put Konstas efforts into perspective, Ponting hit twin tons as an 18 year old but still had to wait until almost 21 before getting a Test call.

If they see it as an opportunity to test Konstas against some serious opposition and to get additional FC matches under his belt then it’s definitely the right call.

If they’re doing it as a battle for a test spot then obviously it’s a huge mistake then

It doesn’t really matter what the media say regardless. We’ve been very cautious with our Test XI selections in general so I can’t see that suddenly changing

Thing is though, it's looking like the opening spot is the one up for grabs right now in the Test side. And he's going to be opening in an A game. It sends a message, intentional or not. And what happens if he makes twin tons again and all the other batsmen fail? There would be a lot of pressure to pick him

To clarify, that comment was in relation to Connolly and 4 bowlers already being named for game 1. That means Connolly will play over Davies or Webster, both of which have far greater test claims than Connolly.

Fair enough, definitely agree on what you say in terms of picking both of them for both games

Also, I saw the Vic team named. Boland and Sutherland selected (the latter likely still on restricted overs though) but no Maxwell unfortunately
