So often the worse team wins after a shootout.

Seriously quality penalties after Stanway though. Need to change our primary taker, I think.

First pen an atrocity but the rest of our pens were excellent

Tbf same goes for the ones Nigeria scored. Keepers might as well not been there for any of the pens full stop

Ah feel for Nigeria there, don't think they made the most of the extra player and you never really backed them on penalties. Other than the first England's were very good tbh

From her run up there was only one way she could put it, the keeper knew that and it forced her to push it wide. The other 4 were outstanding though. Nice to be the rubbish team scraping through on pens for a change. Will need to improve massively for the QF.

I think that's James out of the tournament who has generally been their most creative player. The issue of struggling to score goals returns (it was only really the China game where it hasn't been there).

Yeah, she missed one against Haiti as well, albeit scoring from the second attempt after the keeper had moved off the line.

Quality response from Kelly after the winning goal, doing a Flintoff/Lee with the Nigerian goalie and trying to keep the camera out of it rather than running straight off to the fans and going apeshit with the celebrations.

And yet with an extra woman throughout extra time Nigeria didn't look like scoring. On these margins etc etc.
Yeah, the change in shape worked well I think. They probably should have done something similar when 11 players were on the pitch.

Oddly, the closest we came to scoring was immediately after the sending-off, when Daly couldn't quite get on the end of a cross.

tbf some of the players were excellent tonight. All of the back three were really good throughout, and I thought Walsh came more and more into
the game as it progressed. Hemp and Stamway less so. Also Bronze, who was dead lucky not to concede a penalty.

Yep, it should've been a penalty. But there was no way VAR could give it having ruled out the England one for pretty much the same reason.

Walsh has a fantastic ability to pick a pass if she has decent runners, but England simply didn't have that for most of the game. The front 2 were far too static and offered little movement. I'd imagine we may well switch back to nearer a 4-4-2 formation with James now out.

Wouldn't be surprised if both Kelly and Toone come in who will offer more energy.

I suppose Toone is the likeliest replacement for James. I do think the change in formation helped against China, albeit with James obviously in the starring role. I also think that Nigeria were superb tonight, especially in defence, including their midfield's contribution to closing us down. A lot of teams would have struggled to get past them imo.

Do you really need to Bring Kerr on when 2-0 up? All for giving her some game time, but this just feels unneeded risk territory
