2020/21 New Zealand Domestic Season

Stead said test gloveman BJ Watling would likely return for ND on Wednesday after missing round one with a hip problem.

Fellow test regulars Henry Nicholls (Canterbury) and Ajaz Patel (Stags), who both sat out round one with calf injuries, were unlikely to play next week. “We want to be careful we don’t push them too early and we get an even worse outcome.”

Noone could say for sure, but my best guess if it happened tomorrow would be Young. Later in the season after a few A games, the answer might be different.

It's through NZC's own incompetence of course that Conway doesn't have NZA experience already. Leaving him out for a significantly inferior bat like Young would just be a continuation of the shoddy treatment tbh.

Was a proper opening bat in the NL system too. I was surprised he started his PS career with the blade so poorly, I rate him.

There's five minutes or so of the knock for you. I now have a protected alt on Twitter called @plunketindepth btw. That's where I'll accumulate a list of a few PS duels that might stretch to 50 balls or more, but also on this YT playlist link.

Seems like a really wasted opportunity if we don't give Conway a chance in his preferred #3 spot, should Williamson be injured.

im going to stick up for young here and say he has runs at higher levels even while out of position, devon 'is that a part time spinner? ****!' conway does not yet.

i wouldn't say nzc have treated conway poorly either. incompetent at knowing icc rules sure, but as soon as he was qualified they contracted him and they've been interested in him for ages.

Well you'll be hoping for a Sinclair 214 type of deal no doubt, but you might get Gabriel looking good hitting 150 as Young shuffles his weight forward, then Roach with fast med innies targeting Young's front pad at the other end. A potentially stern test, I'd welcome that part of the selection, at least.

a bit less obvious though. i don't know about anyone else, but before his debut i was under the impression he was a slow swing bowler who just happened to be really tall and he had a high 20s fc average. he wasn't screaming 'pick me' for such a tough series.
Yeah, I'm very much saying that with the benefit of hindsight. As @Kippax says the move to Auckland and shrewd guidance of Malan in the off season really helped Jamieson go up a level. I didn't realise Malan was such a good technical coach.

Heinrich the last six-eight months, he's been massive. His knowledge around bowling has certainly opened my eyes. I think those two from a bowling point of view have been massive."

Will Young definitely need to be given a go. Obviously we'd be thrilled to see Devon Conway picked but Young has not put a foot wrong in the last two years. He's scored at domestic and at NZ A level. It's hard to slot in anyone at the moment particularly in the test batting line up but if they don't then another good opportunity to give Young a go goes down the drain. We have tried Phillips and Darryl Mitchell for heaven's sake. Although Phillips was a bit deserving Mitchell doesn't inspire me at all. If Mitchell and Phillips can play, Young can play any day.

Nah Young would be a very mediocre and uninspiring choice to me when you've got Conway. Get back to me when you can handle Jimmy Neesham's new ball inswingers a bit better, Will Young.

All these cringey middle-aged agribusinessmen trying to barricade themselves in the ****pit of NZ cricket, eh, engaging in some cheeky ploys to resist the Heinrich Malans, Devon Conways and Manfred von Richtofens that have got up from their seats in first-class and are politely knocking on the door. If they could just let them in, all the Heinrichs, Devons and Manfreds could teach them all a thing or two about diligent, smooth flying.

Here's a homegrown duo trying to be so much more fastidious in their work on green seamers. Shame one of them had to nick off defending a fifth-stump line to Will Williams like that, after putting in 50 minutes filled with discipline.

you could literally rewrite this as a crack at conway against effeminate finger spinners and any form of spotlight.

Writers like Geenty putting him on roughly level terms with Young in batting craft might bring out the best in Conway though. When pompous windbags start building him up as a phenom and the most important emerging batsman since Jacques Kallis, that's when we might see a first-class average under double digits over the remaining five months of the season.

covid was/is a golden opportunity to get nz playing against nz seconds and we've blown it.

the windies and pakistan haven't toured here well in recent seasons. hopefully they will this summer but getting a measure of the reserve batting and bowling talent against the main side would be ideal. everyone knows what's up, nowhere to hide, no stats padding against the 5 major nations who hate playing here.

conway's masculinity being attacked by wagner and his competence by some kane chucks, young's front pad tested by southee's off cutter and his patience on 70* by cdg.

Yeah I'd be a fan of getting that IPL five back home and maybe just closing the NZ border for good tbh. You've had your 12-year window to fill your boots with money that should've really been going into improving the lives of young Indians in a more substantive way. Now it's time for full-strength Plunket Shields and Super Smashes....forever.

I'm not a fan of comparing players as they all have their own plus and minus points. It's grossly unfair to put a video of a second inning gig where firebirds had to dig in to draw the game. The same Will Williams was clobbered by Ravindra last season both in T20 and 4 day format last season from memory.

As for Blundell, we know he can play. If he can hit Strac around he can to any bowler in the world.

It doesn't take anything away from Conway, he's a rock star but he's 30. Rewind 10 years ago he wasn't at the same stage as Ravindra is right now.

You can mark my words, having seen how well Ravindra adopts to different formats he's much superior batsman in comparison to anyone in domestic circuit including Conway. I'm actually happy he has temperament in equal measure as much as his stroke play. I know I'll be quoted every time he doesn't do well but I'd place him miles ahead of our domestic players right now. If he continues this way he'll go down as a legend in NZ cricket both with the bat and ball. More so with the bat.

That belief of mine aside I'm hoping Conway to be like Hussey. Get into the national side late and end up a legend.

I still think Young will go very well at international. The decks at international are way flatter than you get at domestic.

That was such a good watch. Love those green seamers. The Henry vs Blundell/Ravindra is test match stuff. Reminded me of 2002 or 03 NZ v India test match with Bond bowling like a dream and one Mr. Dravid leaving of the highest order. Shame both Firebirds openers got out to Will Willaims (great name).
