Most cricket fans want more than 10 nations in the world cup.

I finally got a response from Cricket Australia, almost 2 weeks after my query.

Thanks for your enquiry and feedback. We appreciate the time you have taken to write to us with your thoughts. As you aware, the decision was made by the International Cricket Council (ICC) board to reduce the competing number of teams from 14 to 10 for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, which Australia will host with New Zealand.

Following the announcement by the ICC, Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said he supported the rationale behind the decision

As joint hosts of the 2015 ICC CWC with Cricket New Zealand we are excited about delivering a world class event and we welcome the ICC decision to make it a ten-team event. Philosophically, CA is supportive of a merit-based competition where the public get to see the best sides playing off throughout the tournament so we leave the public wanting for more.

It is important not to look at this decision in isolation as the ICC has introduced some important changes that provide greater competition opportunities for associate and affiliate members, like expanding the T20 WC to a 16-side competition which is played more regularly.

Without knowing the background reasons for the decision, we are sympathetic to Ireland in particular who, if the rankings remained the same as they are now, would miss out.

We would also encourage you to contact the ICC via their website, International Cricket Council - ICC Events, ICC Cricket Rankings, Live Cricket Scores with any feedback on the decision you may have.

But there's approximately no chance of the full members voting themselves a chance of missing out on the World Cup, so the push for a larger tournament and the push for Associate inclusion are effectively the same thing.

Awesome this is a great piece of news.

The article says either a qualifying tournament or based on Ranking. At the present moment where the Test nations play 50 ODI's while Associates play 15 ODI's the ranking would be very unfair. Rather the bottom 2 Test Nations along with 6 ODI nations should play a qualifying tournament and the Top 2 should qualify. Fingers crossed and hoping ICC will use their heads this time

What's the bet they go with qualification through rankings then Zimbabwe manage to pick up a few wins in nothing against Australia to boost their rankings? Very neat and convenient solution to the problem...

Basically Australia and New Zealand want a 10 team world cup. The reason behind that I think is there won't be crowds flocking to see a game between NZL and Kenya or Aus vs Irealnd.

With 10 teams they could have more marquee matches involving the hosts. I also wonder if grounds would fill up for a neutral game between South Africa and Pakistan. Two top teams. But I don't see grounds filling up at all for a contest like that. FTR, even a game between England and SA did not get sold out in Chennai in this WC.

Sub-Continent is a different kettle of fish for every India game was jam packed. So it makes sense for them to have 10 teams. The top 7 should qualify directly and 8,9,10 along with the three associates should play a qualifier just ahead of the tournament to fill up the two spots which would make it fair enough for everyone.

Why won't people get that rating the best teams on current ODI ranking clearly isn't the way to go? Far better to decide based on Test rankings from 11 years ago, isn't it?

Obviously it's not as good as picking the 10 best countries from the 1974 World Accordion Championships, but you have to make comprimises.

Yeah OK this one took me completely by surprise.

Not me. I knew somethig would happen way back when Sharad Pawar made that statement. He wouldn't have said that without the BCCI backing it and if the BCCI was on board you knew there was a chance. Not saying I knew for sure but CA came out in favor of a 10 team format where the BCCI seemed to be against it and you knew that if BCCI wanted to push, there really could be only one winner in that battle.

The 14-team announcement was what surprised me, not the actual associates back in thing. I thought it was 10 or 12.
