2015 World Cup: 10 teams and no associates

That's a quality email, Furball.

Personally, I'm still bothered by 6-team groups at any stage because I think what really kills the WC atmosphere is games where there's very little riding on individual matches. I'd prefer a format similar to the World T20 or the European championships in football.

This is a good point, I doubt there are many cricket fans keen on clogging the schedules even further. However, when it comes to getting rid of ODIs I'd say the pointless 5 and 7-match series would be a good place to start.
IMO what needs to happen with ODIs is that they need to be viewed seperately from Tests.

I really enjoyed the England v Australia series last year because it was a standalone series. I haven't given a **** about the 7 game series in 2009 and 2011 because they came as an afterthought to a hard fought Ashes series.

We're going to India in October to play a 5 match series - while on the one hand it's pretty pointless as we play India in a 5 match ODI series in September in England, IMO it's the future of ODI series. Play them as standalone series, seperate from Test series, and you allow ODI-only rivalries to grow.

More 3 and 4 nation ODI tournaments, rather than bilateral series, would also be a step in the right direction.

Why should only two or three associates get a chance to qualify though? ALL should get the chance.

Right now the top 4 of the ICC trophy or whatever it is called get to play the WC. Top 4 is a stretch, Top 3 should have the right to fight it with 7,8,9 would be a fair enough solution.

I do agree with you on one thing, The bilateral ODI series have become pretty much redundant and pointless.

Yes, for me, have the 8 test nations or the top 8 in the rankings whichever, then leave 2 spots open for the top 2 from the Associates, in a ICC WC qualifier, where the winner and runner up go through.

Fair enough the only problem though is 9th and 10th place teams still need to fulfill the ICC's FTP. How can they do both? It does not add up

The FPT is getting rightly overhauled in a couple of years anyway in favour of the Test championship. So I should think we can be free to work the new one around global events.

According to Trent Johnston on twitter, Zimbabwe have withdrawn their invitation to Ireland to play them in September. Dire stuff if true, but you can understand what a crappy position Zimbabwe are in where if they lose there will be even more of an uproar.

If they could find a balance there, We Can ask WI, Bang, Zim to go play qualifiers

Agree, I hate bilateral series that are slapped on the end of test series, they loose there meaning and competitiveness. I remember the England v SA series, in 2008, when England beat them 4-0, it was clear that, SA after winning the Tests, weren't up for it and England were and the results and how SA played proved it.
But when a team, goes to a country, just to play a one day series, that's all there is to play for and all the focus is on that, so the intensity is so much better and you get better cricket.

wtf, appalling. Really poor from Zimbabwe given that they've struggled to attract top quality opposition for the last 5 or so years as well.

It might be the salvation of the ODI, certainly in England, if this was adopted - I don't mind ODIs at all but given a choice between them and Tests it's no contests. For me there is no real interest in ODIs that follow or precede a Test series - as far as results are concerned I'm only interested in the Tests - so 5 ODIs between us and India later this summer won't really matter to me - that said if we had India going home after the Tests and another country coming in for 5 ODIs then that would be much more compelling as a contest and would help to cement the ODIs as a worthwhile series of games in their own right rather than just a bolt on to the main event

Yeah, this is something I've been arguing for ever since the 2008 series where we beat South Africa 4-0.

Hmmm, knockout games, right?

Let me in on the action thanks. And I don't care if New Zealand end up playing pygmies from the Congo in the semis, I'll be going on the opposition, with our semi-final record...
