Yeah I'm struggling to see how Gayle is a better ODI batsman than Symonds. Interesting list though.

Seems everyone wants someone higher in the list. Well, you can't have 30 batsmen in the top 20 now, can you?

Days of Grace

The formula would be fascinating reading, though.
POINTS ALLOCATED: BATSMEN
Average: x7.5
Runs:
8000+: 50
5000-7999: 35
3000-4999: 20
2000-2999: 13
1000-1999: 8
500-999: 4

Centuries: x5
Consistency in reaching fifty (%): x3
Strike Rate: x3.5
Less than 50 matches: -10% of rating
Less than 40 matches: -20% of rating
Less than 30 matches: -30% of rating
Less than 20 matches: -40% of rating

The weighting for the average used to be 6.5 and the weighting for s/r used to be 4.5. They are now 7.5 and 3.5 respectively, so batsmen from the 1980s such as Haynes and Greenidge can now move up the order.

no offense but common sense should prevail over some stupid formula.

Symonds is a lot better than Gayle.

I have made the following changes. The explanations are in bold.

POINTS ALLOCATED: BOWLERS

Wickets: x0.35 - Kept same

Strike-Rate (S/R):
20: 395 21: 376 22: 358 23: 341 24: 325 25: 309
26: 295 27: 281 28: 267 29: 255 30: 242 31: 231
32: 220 33: 209 34: 200 35: 190 36: 181 37: 172
38: 164 39: 156 40: 149 41: 142 42: 135 43: 129
44: 123 45: 117 46: 111 47: 106 48: 101 49: 96
50: 91 51: 87 52: 83 53: 79 54: 75 55: 71 56: 68
57: 65 58: 62 59: 59 60: 56 61: 53 62: 50 63: 48
64: 46 65: 44 66: 42 67: 40 68: 38 69: 36 70: 34
71: 32 72: 30 73: 29 74: 28 75: 27 76: 26 77: 25
78: 24 79: 23 80+: 22

Instead of that tedious process I used the formula Points = 1045 * e ^ (-0.04 * SR, which yielded same numbers

Economy Rate (E/R):
3.0: 500 3.1: 453 3.2: 415 3.3: 381 3.4: 350 3.5: 321
3.6: 294 3.7: 270 3.8: 250 3.9: 229 4.0: 210 4.1: 193
4.2: 177 4.3: 162 4.4: 149 4.5: 137 4.6: 125 4.7: 115
4.8: 106 4.9: 97 5.0: 89 5.1: 82 5.2: 75 5.3: 69
5.4: 63 5.5: 58 5.6: 53 5.7: 49 5.8: 45 5.9: 41
6.0+: 38

Here also used the same trick. Points = 6456 * e ^ (-0.8567 * ER),once again yieded same numbers

4WI: x5
5WI: x7.5

%4/5WI wickets per match: x750

Wickets per Match (WPM): x100 - Wickets per innings used. Bowler can't do anything if the matches rained off or captain not given them the ball.

Less than 50 matches: -10% of rating
Less than 40 matches: -20% of rating
Less than 30 matches: -30% of rating
Less than 20 matches: -40% of rating
Once more, number of innigs used, reaons are the same

Then I calculated Global Average (GAvg), Global Er, Global SR at the mid point of the career of the player. That means if a player has played from 1980 to 1990, I found what were the average, ER and SR of all bowlers during those ten year period.

GER = 0.025 * (Starting year + End year) / 2 + 3.567
GAvg = 0.108 * (Starting year + End year) / 2 + 24.32
GSR = 0.431 * (Starting year + End year) / 2 + 59.45

Then Adjusted stats were made using following formula.

AER = Players ER / Global ER * 4.248 (i.e. Average ER in all ODIs)
AAvg = Player Avg / Global Avg * 27.209 (i.e. Mean of Averages in all ODIs)
ASR = Player SR / Global SR * 70.8 (i.e. Average SR in all ODIs)

Now that made sure that I have dealt with the increasing trend of bowling averages, strike rates and economy rates is properly dealt.

Then with above minor modifications, I ran the same query. Only matches against AUS, ENG, IND, NZ, PAK, SAF, SL, WI was considered.

The Qualification was 50 ODI wickets at least.

I don't wish to casts doubts over this formula but it appears to have calculated Len Pascoe at Number 1.

DoG's bowling ranking 'results' are thousand times better than Migara's...Though I have some issues with the batting ranking...

Anyways though not a bad effort, but still the use of slabs for points...I'm so tired with this old-dated approach...For example, 2 batsmen scoring 5000 and 7999 runs get the same points for runs...But 2 batsmen scoring 5000 and 4999 runs get different points for runs...

His method had a basic flaw of hypothizing game in 1971 was same as now. ER, SR and Averages all ahve goen up, so have to take that in to account. Because it does not fit your imagination now results have become bad. Onus is on you show why. I said earlier, wanted Joel Garner to be in, so reduced the number of wickets to 50. If you want Pascoe out of it, increase it up to 75.

If I have been harsh with my words that was unintensional...I said I didn't like the 'result'...For example, according to your ranking MG Johnson is a better ODI bowler than 4 bowlers after him in the ranking...Now, I and most other members (and you too, I am sure) know while Johnson is a good ODI bowler, but from what he has achieved till now, he's quite far behind the 4 bowlers after him...This is just one example...

But one point you made is very much valid...Standardising results for different eras is very much needed for ODI ranking, be it batting or bowling...

Can you please explain to me how you get a formula in which a lower strike-rate/economy rate converts to greater points/value. How do you get Microsoft Excel to do that?

And, also, can you please give me details as to how to copy a list of players' stats from cricinfo and somehow paste it into Microsoft excel without having to spend hours adjusting the columns afterwards?

Cheers.
