Ganguly to retire after Australia Tests

Well, if the "Fab 5 told to prepare for retirement" thread goes ahead, Indian cricket wont be in the greatest of states.
India have a huge amount of depth. Badri, Kaif, Sharma, Raina waiting in the wings batting wise and a wealth of spin bowling to replace Kumble (Chawla, Powar, Kartik just off the top of my head). They'll definitely be able to hold their own in the short term.

We're not going to be minnow bad any time soon, but I do expect a lot more inconsistency when bedding in a lot of new guys. Once the 4 great bats go, we'll be so ridiculously reliant on Sehwag and Gambhir it's worrying. Unless of course someone steps up big time, but that would be a bonus for mine and unfair to expect a new guy to be able to come in straight away and accomplish.

Dunno, they drew a series they should have won, as much as I loved seeing our batsmen pile on the runs. I'd say it did have an effect on the team.
I'd much sooner point the finger at McGrath and Warne being absent than Waugh's farewell.
The lost play at The 'Gabba certainly made some amount of impact too.

Had lost time been able to be made-up, Australia could quite conceivably have won that game.

Could go either way but hardly a period 'where they cannot win a game' and 'no hope'.

AWTA, Indian cricket probably has the best bench strength it has ever had, there are lot of talented young batsmen, spinners and fast bowlers waiting in the wings to get an opportunity, of course they aren't anywhere near the class of the fab 5, but they still are good enough to make sure that Indian cricket' standard doesn't dip much.

Love him for the same reason Waugh doesn't:

Waugh mentions in his book how Ganguly managed to get under the Aussies' skins, putting the boot on the other foot. "They have won most of their games at home, beaten West Indies 5-0 at home, beaten India, Pakistan at home," Ganguly said in an interview before the series. "They toured here in '96 and lost. They toured here in '98 and lost. So obviously that's going to be at the back of their mind."

"You had to give him an 'A' for effort in his attempt to annoy us," Waugh wrote, "and in particular me. It worked to a certain extent." It helps that India are a naturally aggressive side. That they don't give Australia a headstart.

Ganguly got India to think big. He believed Australia could be beaten, and he got his team to believe that. There were men in the side who would stand up against Australia's intimidatory tactics, so that when it came to the crunch Australia were not the predetermined winners. If others could choke against Australia, Australia could also choke against India - like they did in the final innings in Kolkata in 2001.

Hi,
Indian former captain Sourav Ganggully retired from cricket I am very much sucked by this news.I think he has taken right decision because he had been blamed since 4 years.Though he is the most successful captain ever .But The selector had been ignoring him though was playing well.In last Srilanka series most of the bats men failed to score including Sachin, Rahul they have been selected for Irani trophy but Sourav was not selected. But The selection committee headed by K srikant made a good decision by selecting Sourav for Australia test series .Lastly I can say Sourav is a really great Batsmen .I hope Your good performance for Australia test series.Your are Really Night Rider .

Always loved Ganguly. My admiration for him only grew after his last comeback against all odds. Tendulkar and Dravid will get bigger accolades and farewells when they leave, but Ganguly was just as important to India’s success as those two.

Yeah love the bloke, for all his faults, you can't deny what he has done for Indian cricket as whole. One of the best ODI batsmen of all time as well.

One of the greatest Cricketers from India, had limited talent, but he made the most of it. He is our greatest captain and highly under-rated by many. His biggest achievement was to take Indian Cricket out of Match Fixing rut and take it to a height Indian cricket fans have rarely seen .

Well Done Ganguly !!!

Good move from Ganguly. A very good player for India; both in Tests and ODIs. He picked the right time, imo, as his place in the team was being put under scrutiny with performance as a secondary criteria, it is then that you know your time is up. He has a final chance for a good sendoff, whether his last Test will be the second Test or the fourth Test remains to be seen, but I do hope that it is the latter. Moreover, I believe that this is a clever move from Ganguly which may just guarantee him a place in the first two Tests against Australia, if his place wasn't guaranteed already.

Ganguly was one of the best captains India had. I wont call him the best but one of the best is a tag honourable enough. He was a limited test batsman in the sense that he was not a great like a Tendulkar but is one of the best one day players of all time.

He was treated poorly by the selectors in the end when he was dropped from the ODI squad despite having a successful run previous to his dropping. This is the best way to go keeping pride intact given that his selection is not a guarantee in the squad.

It is sad. His time had come for sure. But wish he was going happily - doesn't look like that. Do hope he scores some good runs in the series (assuming he will be in the playing eleven).
A player with more grit and character than cricketing skills. His batting looked good when it worked but his technical difficulties were there for anyone who knew the game to see, particularly against the faster bowling.

Great performer in the shorter version of the game and responsible for changing the outlook of the Indian team. The second skipper after Pataudi Jr to do so. He will be missed.

To be honest.. india doesn't need him anymore.. i mean they have got alot of fun and exciting cricketers such as rohit sharma, Gathum Gambir and soo on coming in.. so i consider it a good move considering his recent form..
